It has come to my attention that it is very very very difficult to find out what kind of trees are growing in my area. Does anyone know of a website that will help me to identify the local trees so I can know what I'm cutting down before I turn it into a bow?

I don't know about Sussex co. , but I can tell you for certain that there is plenty of Osage Orange growing in hedge rows north of Front Royal along hwy 340. I realize that is quite a distance from you, but chances are there is some closer to you. Look for the fruit that looks like lime green grapefruit. The fruit stays on the trees long after the leaves and they are quite easy to spot from the road once you know what to look for.

The Osage I seen was actually closer to Stephens City. One of the hedge rows was at least a half mile long. There were also several trees growing in drainage ditches to farm ponds in the area. Unfortunately I was only working in the northern half of VA, so I didn't get to scope out your area. In the spirit of full disclosure, I did "collect" a sample at the end of the row closest to the road. Nice, thick rings and straight grained. Kind of a silly thing to do since I live in Osage central, but curiosity got the better of me. Good luck,

Thanks for the info Josh. I live in Northern VA, about 40 minutes from Front Royal and I never see the magical "monkey ball tree". I've heard they were here in VA but I was beginning to think they were very sparse. Now that I know we have them I'll keep looking.
