Title: Mohegan
Post by: Marc St Louis on July 02, 2007, 10:45:22 am
This is a little Mohegan replica I just finished. I made this bow for a gentleman in Sweden. The bow is made from Elm and is 54" long, 1 1/8" wide and pulls 50# @ 27". All the bending was done with dry heat with about 3 1/2" of reflex put into the bow while I was tempering it. It holds about 1 1/2" of reflex right now after being unbraced and springs up to about 2" after awhile. The string is Linen. Here's a couple of pics

Very nice recurve.  Did you wrap the tips and handle with thread or is it painted?  I like the turkey-tail nocks.

Thanks guys. This is the 3rd Mohegan I make and they are neat little bows. Of them all, the Mohegan is about my favorite style

It was a good piece of Elm, Brian, but not exceptional

It's just paint Lennie. I kind of like a simple paint job like this. Doesn't overwhelm the bow

Thanks guys. Elm is a good choice of wood when making bows of this style.

Nice, as usual Marc.  Do you find 1/2" of work fatigue typical?  Any antecdotes re: whether more than 1/2" eventually translates into more permanent set as the bow is worked more?  I'm been working on this theory but don't make so many bows anymore to test it frequently.

Depends on the stress level of the bow and the wood. I'm sure this bow will take more set as it is shot in. I don't make that many bows anymore either, for myself in any case

These bows are good shooters Ray but not great performers. The design is good but there are things that could be done to improve performance

This is one gorgeous bow. Very distinctive style. Looking forward to seeing this tomorrow for July Self Bow of the Month.
