Looks like most of the models has it turning east and just clipping the OBX of NC now.  Still looks to be a pretty strong storm, but hopefully damage will be minimal.

It will probably be a Cat 3 or 4 by the time it hits Virginia and the OBX.

Take that back, It's already a Cat 3, gust up to 140mph. It had 90 mph winds at 6 this morning.

It'll run out of gas by then. They speed up when they hit that cold water. You have a surfboard? Probably some of the best surfing seen on the end of Long Island in 20 years. ;D Or, OBX.

Unfortunately we won't get anything from this storm. We could use a little rain though.
Noel, flooding is what you guys should be concerned about. Apparently there is a front coming to the NE before Irene gets there so the ground will be saturated. Water is what kills or injures most folks in these big storms and not necessarily the winds.
The last big storm to hit the East Coast was Hugo in 1989. It was headed towards the Savannah River when it stopped in the Gulf Stream and built up strength. It moved 1 degree north and ran over Charleston instead. We drove up to Charleston the day after to deliver food and camping gear to a friend living there and were amazed at the damage. Live oak trees swisted appart and 100ac of mature pine trees snapped off about 30 feet above the ground.
We were living in Bluffton SC at the time which is only a few miles north of Savannah. If the storm had come into Savannah our house(3' above sea level) would have been gone.
I was a boat mechanic at the time and had customers boats to deal with before the storm came in. Got pretty hairy towards the end. My wife Marcia and I were dealing with 4' to 5' breakers at the boat ramp as we pulled those boats out and secured them for the storm.

Somebody call Jamie in Waterbuery CT.  Looks like he is in the center of the bullseye.

pat, you are right the flooding will be terrible, luckily mu house is on the of the highest parts of the island, but i wouldn't be surprised if the island became 2 or 3 after this. the place im worried about is a small sandy strip connecting two parts of the island, i was almost wiped out in 1938, its only like 2ft above sea level with a big cove funneling waves into it :'(. all i know is im getting my boat out of the water no matter what ;)

Put your boat on the ground(not on a trailer) and put the drain plug back in it. Let it fill with water so the wind doesn't blow it away. Disconect the battery as well.

i would put it on the ground except we would never get it back on, its only 23 ft, but it weights  2 tons dry

You can wench it back on the trailer. I have done it with bigger boats than yours....and by myself.  Disconect the trailor from the vehicle and attach the wench cable to the bow eye of the boat. If your trailer breaks in the middle release the latch before you start cranking it on. The trailer will  go under the boat instead of the boat coming up on the trailer.
To take the boat off the trailer back up to a tree and tie a rope from the ski eye on one side, around the tree and to the other ski eye then drive the trailor from under the boat. Depending on how deep your boat is you may have to add blocks on either side to keep it upright on the ground.

sounds like that would work, not sure how my dad would feel about doing it, but i would be up for it. by the way, why should you put the boat on the ground?

Less wind resistance! Plus a boat full of water will crush your trailer.
If you guys have a boat mechanic you regularly use ask him to help.

alive and well david. seen some crazy stuff after that storm. still a lot of areas without power and im pretty damn sick of cutting trees. flood damage was the worst though. at one point i was driving up a hill and saw an area of water running through the woods, 3' deep , with white caps about 100 yrds wide. this was where a stream normally is. a lot of houses went under from the rain. vermont took the biggest hit from flood waters though. they are heros up there for doing what they did. they actually let their rivers overflow in spots behind the dams so that mass and connecticut didnt get crushed by the coming water. if they hadnt done that the connecticut and farmington rivers would of taken out towns. just under 800,000 people without power in this state alone and after day 3 it was down to 200,000. definitely not what we are used to up here. we can handle snow, but not 17 trillion gls of water that the storm dumped on us. my area got 8.5" of rain from it. the shoreline is gonna be screwed up for a while. funny thing is rick trojanowski live south of me in long island. he had minimal damage. our hills just couldnt take the rain. we had a tornadoe in june that came with microbursts and i think if it hadnt been for that storm cleaning the woods it would of been a lot worse for the trees.

Glad you made it through all that rain. We're kinda used to them down here. I'm glad you guys didn't get the 150 MPH winds  with it.
