Title: 46" backed birch called bear (not for bom)
Post by: half eye on August 22, 2011, 11:43:34 pm
This little bow is made of White (paper) Birch backed with hickory....I steamed it into a mild deflex and flipped up the tips about 1/2 inch or so. This bow draws mid-50's at 25" so I cant comfortably get it back to my draw of 26". It's a nice little bow and shoots hard, I'll like it better when I get a little weight off it.
hope ya like it, here's the pics.....oh, I call it Bear cause it's a bear for me to draw....some sick humor is all.

Rich I genuinely thank you for your craftsmanship and willingness to share your talents. Please continue to inspire and motivate myself. Now after that marvelous smoke job I just laid out, what would it take have that bow?  ;D JK, (or am I) ?  ???

That looks like a real nice one Rich, your tiller looks perfect.  Pretty heavy too for such a little bear :)  Did it take much set?  Just curious because we don't see many people using birch for a belly.

Cameroo,   I've made 8-9 bows now with birch as the core wood, they have all preformed very well and are snappy shooters. I usually back them with heartwood hard maple, this one is hickory backed with some wood from Ken 75. I have yet to find the slightest sign of compression problems, no excessive set, no compression fractures.....nothing like that. I cant speak to suitability for self bows because I have not made one of those yet. Also the grain orientation has been "any which way" from plain sawed to rift sawed and quartersawed.....dosen't seem to make any difference. I used it to back an ash bow and it performed well there as well.....but that's only one bow so take it with a grain of salt, too.

Thanks you fellas for the comments, this little bugger shoots hard and I REALLY like the bend through "D" bows, the mid to upper 50" range seems about ideal for my 26+" draw. Younger, stronger guys would probably like 'em a little shorter....cause they build power in a hurry.

Great little bow Rich! I always like your paint jobs and color schemes also. What's your formula for that light milky olive/khaki green I've seen on a few of your bows? Were you a sign painter at one time or something. That looks like a real sign guy color with the black and would look good with a little maroon also.

Thanks again for the wonderful comments, everyone.

randman, the dye I use on the bow is real simple, it is just food color in rubbing alcohol and rubbed on with a cloth rag. Lets the wood show through but you can give it several coats and get as dark as ya want. The black is really several coats of dark brown (RIT dye) over the top of the green.
If you want really intense colors just use the food color straight out of the bottle. Just to let ya know that stuff will dye skin REAL good as well.

That is a wonderful bush bow!  I'm so used to long-bows...I'm tillering a shorty out now that's sinew backed and I gotta tell ya, it takes some getting used too, I keep thinking the bow is going to blow in a big way...just not used to that short of a length...again, killer job on the birch shorty.  Cheers, P1.

Thanks Arrowwind.

Primitive, I know exactly what you are saying about the "anticipation" part. I think there "force-draw" curve is steep also but I have a short draw anyways (26") so it's not that much of an issue. What finally helped me shoot them a lot better is looking at them like a hand-gun and not a rifle. Ya got to believe that the bow has the power and speed at the short draw and try to not think in terms of pullin it back to your ear.....I put mine out in front and draw right straight back to my face and concentrate on the "spot" and release, and to this day it amazes me how fast them arrows can cover 15/20 yards..........thanks for your nice comments
