Fellas,
Thought I'd give a sapling bow a go for a change of pace. This sapling was cut about 10 years ago and it (+ 2 others) were put aside for use as cloths closet rods in a friends log home.....they didn't get used so......
The bow is 62" ntn, draws 45 @ 26" (just about 50# @ 28) I did not change the wood at all, One end has some deflex the other was straight but a little twist. I choose not heat anything and just tillered around the issues. The sapling was only 1-1/4" in dia. the finnished bow is 1" wide to mid limb and round tapered to 1/2" knocks. The pin knocks are 2" long (dont know why, but they can be cut off). bow shoots well and is well mannered and smooth.
It's the first stave bow so feel free to let me know what ya think. Allmost forgot.....the little sapling has 23 growth rings in the 1-1/4" dia.

Extra cool Rich as always. I think it is a wonderful thing for someone that has been in archery as long as you have to be able to say" This is the first one" about anything.

excellent lookin stave bow Rich love the simplicity of these bows . from the looks of it i bet its fast, doesnt take much hornbeam to make a bow does it
62 " wheres your ladder ? >:D

My idea of a perfect bow! 8) As simple as it gets but still effective.

Gotta love it...simple, effective, deadly...nicely done.
-
Thank you for the nice comments (except that Georga fella) Didn't really know what to expect, but with our "knock the bark off" white woods up here, it was easier than I thought. Gettin a picture perfect tiller is gonna be the hard part.

Nice first "REAL" bow >:D

Nice work Rich! I have a nice 5" HHB next to the house I have been leaving alone so he could grow.................his time may just be up!
-
Very cool Rich!!! Love it that you (finally) tried a stave bow ;D...and you made it look pretty easy too! My Dad had a HHB on his property up north that came down in a storm but I only caught him cutting it up into fire wood but did manage one large branch, we'll see if its salvageable for a bow.

-
nice work Rich.you did good my friend.don't let the short jokes get to ya.i am 5'4",so i have heard them all.i tell them that i am like a fine sportscar, low to the ground for speed lol.

Thanks to all of you for the nice responses. One bow sure dont make me a stave bowyer, but it was fun and nowhere as though as I thought it would be. With my woodcarving background I actually found this project went pretty easy and like the "free-hand" aspect of the work.
Bubby, I really dont see any difference in the two as far as the performance, but in all fairness this bow is really long by my standards, wouldn't want to say till I try it with a real short one. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a "soft-spot" for the quartersawn only cause I made bows that took a lot of abuse from the stuff and cant say the same for the staves......hell if it wasn't for the white woods and just knockin the bark off, I still wouldn't be makin staves at all. Guess I'd have to say I really love makin bows and when it gets down to the short strokes it dont matter how a guy goes about it......hows that for "skirtin" an issue? >:D

Nice tiller...guess you were getting bored with board?

Good job on that ironwood Rich.I like it. I've got one ready to tiller in the next couple of days as well. ;) God Bless
-
Nice to see that! Simply great :)
Like sapling bows.
Is there any reason for the long tips?
-
That's a looong bow for you Rich. Thanks for showing it to us.
-
Zoltan, no reason....it's just that pin knocks let ya keep cuttin the bow down to get shorter without too much work.....I aint cut them off as I might make it shorter yet.

Just goes to show ya, a Master can make a bow out of anything! You know Rich, this opens a whole new realm of sources of good bow makin stuff.
Next thing you know, you'll gettin into the snakey, wiggly stuff. ;D
-
good example of a sweet simple bow
-
Wow, I really like that bow. Could see it in the hands of my ancestors 200 years ago, doing what it was built to do!
-
Thank you again fellas, got a second ash stave bow about ready. I never had anything against staves......it's just that with one eye ya aint got no depth perception and one good hand sort'a takes the fun out of drawknives and such. So if I can't just peel the bark I'm out of luck....the ash stave was really a "slabwood" piece (first cut by the sawyer) I knocked the bark off with a spud and cut it down from there so dont know if that's truely a stave or not. But I do appreciate yer comments,
thanks rand, eric, scott and stan.....Del...ya allways make me laugh, love your sense of humor ;D
-
Rich,
Does this mean you've never made an osage short bow from a stave??? PM me your address, I have something for you. George
PS. Nice bow!
-
Rich, you did a great job! Love it. Very nicely done. Jawge

I stay off the internet for a little while and the next thing you know Rich is building bows from staves!! Them poor Michigan trees are in trouble.
As always Rich, excellent work.. you still the man.
