Title: Thinning nipple
Post by: Tower on July 25, 2011, 11:48:01 am
This was found in a plowed field in New Braunfels TX. The preform seems to have been built for convexity not thinning overall. There is some pressure flaking on the edges. Thenipple I think was built to thin the point from the base to the tip. Its not a broken drill or preforator. I'm not calling it paleo, but I think the act of fluting may have remained a part of the reduction process if the material wasn't cooraporating with the knapper.

That's interesting and I'll buy that theory.

I have thinned smallish pieces using that set up right there. I think you are spot on with your observations.

When I am having trouble I do the same but remove a small flake on each side of the nipple

Mercy no. I've finished a lot of preforms that I've found, but this on is kinda unique at leats for me. Maybe if I find a lot more.
