I was just wonderin if the bark is still peeling off easy, I was wantin to go cut me one more osage and one more hackberry for the year. I live outside cincinnati if that makes a difference.

ive been cutting vine maple here in western Washington and i can just peel the bark of with my hands if i get it started with a knife

I aint cutting anything ...until the Temperature drops below 100...and that won't be for another two months...

I'm with ElD, It's too hot and too many mosquitos for me to work on any of the wood I have cut.

I'm trying to line up some help for next week. I have a monster fallen osage tree that is calling to me.

Well I am not very well equipped. All I got is a little sears handsaw, a hachet, and some rail road ties that I use as wedges, I use a couple pieces of osage as hammers as I split the log. How recently did it fall? I primarily like to only cut wood that I can easily remove the bark, seal up, N throw upstairs somewhere in my house. I don't like to cut when the bark won't peel cause it comes with extra little critters alot of the time, and I store my bow wood right across the hallway from my bows so I wouldn't want no daring little borer to find it's way into one of my bows. I am also too lazy to remove the bark. I can split some wood though if ya let me at it. I get the split started on the end with the hatchet, till I can fit a good 3 foot long or so osage piece in the beginning of the split, then I switch from pounding the stick down the log to using the hatchet and stakes, as well as sawing the fibers that pop up from splitting with the handsaw, and I can usually get a good sized 12" log halfed and quartered in no time that way. How big would you guess diameter is this "monster"? (scared to here what ya say, :laugh:)

My brother in law is supposed to help me. I did a Euro mount on his buck last fall so he owes me one. I'm sure my Dad will "supervise" and tell us what we are doing wrong. The tree is laying across a dry creek bed. It has been there a couple of years, but it is still good. The trunk isn't touching the ground. I trimmed a trail to it last week so he can get his quad down to it. I hope that splitting it into quarters will allow him to pull them out.

I have never just been able to pull the bark off of Osage!!

Danial,it is way too hot to be cutting wood in our area.you'll get a stroke man.i've been scraping on an oak bow for the cookoff for a couple hours a day.that is about all i can handle,then it's back inside to the AC.if you go cutting wood,be carefull and keep hydrated buddy.lots of luck,steve

I feel ya. It's humid is hell is what makes it so bad.

It's LITERALLY 110 in the shade here right now. Even in the earliest part of the morning it's pushing it unless you really need to do something outside. I would like to cut some wood right now, but it's not worth it.

I have cut 3 this month one hickory one red oak and one elm On all the bark came right with just a tug or two. It is hot a can be but I had no stock pile so it was well worth it for me. Plus I think I droped about 10 pounds from all the sweating lol. My wife liked it as well lol.

A friend of mine was out playing golf last week, very hot. He got sunstroke and died on the way to the hospital. He was 73, which used to seem real old to me and now ... not so much. Be smart out there in this heat.

Been hot here too but expect it to break soon.
Got in the mood to cut yesterday when I was working for some people where I have cut osage years ago. Would like to look the trees over again more closely and try to find maybe some snakey staves or better straight ones as I think I now know more what to look for. They have fence row after fence row of osage!!! :)
Also they have a wet area where the trees are groing and hope for maybe thicker rings??
I never take the bark off right away...I leave it on till it is dry and I'm ready to make a bow!!
