Title: I-10 chert.
Post by: Tower on July 18, 2011, 11:19:01 am
A good friend of mine has been trying his hand at knapping. He works for a private lab testing materials on road construction sites. Sometimes his job gives him a perfect opprotunity to gather knapping materials. The last time he gave me some chert that he pulled from a high wall on I-10 in west TX. It was pretty fractured from the shot but  still able to get some arrow points from them. One piece was sound enough to make a larger point. It was a little tough raw so I put a little heat & this was what become of it.

Timo, its almost the same chert Kinley sells. His rock is better than this stuff. It comes from I-10 & Hwy 20 around ElPaso.

Symetry is perfect as usual Tower. I spent a lot of time walking the deserts around El Paso and didn't find anything knappable. Did find a lot of pottery shards and a  few small points though.

Man I wish I-10 ran through NC.  Of course, even if it did I wouldn't be able to do anything like that.  Great job once again, Tower.
