I named this bow "Chaser" after my faithful trusty dog that passed away. You know I can't believe how much I miss him. So I decided to name the bow I was working on at the time after him. I know that sounds corny but he was part of the family. Anyway here is the specs it is 64 inchs NTN it pulls 53# @ 24". I glued 4 inchs of reflex in it on the form it holds 1 3/4 after 500-600 shots. Its 1 3/16 near handle, 7/8 wide at mid limb and 7/16 wide at the tips.Tip overlays are osage. I got a little creative with the handle and added ebony arrow heads. I used 2500 lb epoxy ( I work at a glue factory ) and get it free. I really like how it worked. I used clothing dye for the black and brown leather dye for the brown. This may sound strange but a month before Chaser passed away I gave him his yearly butch cut and decided to save some of his hair. So I used it as the string silencers. Some may laugh but it works and I think he probably appreciates it from dog heaven. Enjoy the pictures. I know one thing the pictures make me wan't to go on a diet. :)

Anyone who would think that is strange has never had a truly great dog. The ebony arrow heads are cool. Good tribute to a friend, I say. Justin
-
wow thats a really nice bow.
-
Sorry you lost your buddy. Our dogs have always been family members and were sadly missed when they left us.
Your bow looks good The arrowheads are cool. After 500-600 shots, I'd say you had a keeper. Pat
-
Nice bow Ron. Sorry to hear about your buddy, sure will miss my Sandy when she is gone. :'(
Btw on a lighter note, I hear ya about the diet, I hate lookin at pictures of my self, but hey think of it this way, if you or me get stranded on a deserted island we got plenty of fuel to spare. ;D Maybe enough time to fix us up a bow and do some fishin ::)
-
Sorry about Chaser. Still miss my ol buddy too.
Your bow looks great. I love the arrowheads and the way the stained Boo goes with the Ipe.
-
AAaawwwww, there's a tear in my beer. That's beautiful man, the story and the bow. I miss my last dog, but she hated me shootin my bow.
-
Beautiful bow jignfrog and nice story.a man don't have many really special dogs in his life and it is tough when the go,been there. :( :)

Good lookin bow jign, great story behind it too.
I had an English setter that I rescued from the pound, he couldn't hunt for beans,
was scared of the gun but he went every where with me.

I love BBIs and plan to build one during the Winter or Spring. I also love dogs - you mean there are still folks who think dogs are not family members. The only reason we can't claim them as dependants is it'd be to hard to controll the "cheaters", I'm convinced :). I am going to capture your FD for my Traditional Bows Drawn Pages (Page 13). Probably post it some time today.

Very nice bow

Thanks guys.
I am glad to hear I am not alone. You all are great friends.
-
Your bow looks great Jignfrog!, and naming the bow after your dog is the ultimate compliment you can give him. Very cool thread!
-
Whew - you've really scored on this one. Got you bookmarked for June Backed Bow of the Month, too. Thanks for the contribution.
-
I am sorry to hear of your loss Jignfrog. We had to put a member of our family down two weeks ago, we feel your pain. That is a super tribute to your partner, and an awesome looking bow. I'm sure Chasers tails a waggin knowing that he was the proud owner of a human as talented as yourself ;) David

A nice story behind the bow. I like the handle overlay - very artistic. It's interesting that you reversed the handle wrap. Do you like the feel of the handle better that way?
-
Just curious, is that drawn to 24"? It don't seem like it is bending all that much for a 64" bow. Could just be me though. Justin

Justin
I probably only pulled it to 23 inchs after looking at the picture. It looks as though I bent my elbow a tad and a little short on the draw. I shoot quick. I don't hold at full draw but a split second so I guess I unknowingly short drawed for the picture. I will think about that on my next post.
Gordon
I usually put the handle wrap on that way because I like my fingers to be on a smooth surface rather than have it on stitching. I guess it depends the shape of the handle.

I agree with ya we would be last to go if stranded on an deserted island. Thanks for turning it around and making the picture better. You are alright. :)

Thanks for posting on your fd page. That is a cool page to look at.
To everyone thanks for the compliments.

Chaser would be proud. We named the Rudderbows company after my dog Rudder. I had him while serving in the U.S Navy. best pal a guy could have.
-
Great bow man, I too can apreciate the story behind it, and I am sorry for youre loss. Marlin

Great Looking bow! I just retired the bow named after my last Labrador retriever, Pigger, after two seasons. She (the bow) managed to take several deer and mountain lion but got a little banged up chasing the lion and I don’t want to press the limits with her. May Chaser, the bow, bring you as many great memories of the hunt as both Pigger’s brought to me?

My pleasure, Ron.

rudderbows
I had wondered a time or two what the rudder part of your company name was. Now I know. That is great!
Silvershooter
I am finding out that there are a lot of people out here that named their bows after a pet that has passed away. That is a great story on " pigger " sounds like it brung you luck.
Thanks

Have fun with it. I think IPE is the best wood to work with. It can take a lot of abuse. Thanks for the compliment.
Ron

Cool lookin bow! I haven't tried anything exotic yet - but will, I'm sure. Sorry bout your dog - I have the same story almost. Had the poor little guy for ten years (went huntin and fishin with me every time) last time I saw (or heard) him, he was chasin a deer down through the back yard - been about four years. Wonder what kind of bow would fit with the name of Dinky?
-
Cowboy
I would think a little ambush bow as short as you dare. With his colors some how. See chaser was black with a little brown. So I tried to make a bow with his colors. Sorry to hear that at least he was doing something he loved the last time you saw him. Chaser loved deer. He sat there with me the whole time while quartering up the deer. He would wait patiently he would always end up with a leg or two. He would prance off with it with is head held hi. I have been amazed at the response of this posting. There are a lot of animal lovers here. It has been very cool.
Thanks

This is a little funny - nobody laugh! This little dog was no huntin dog by any stretch of the imagination, but he was a hell of a good buddy :). I'd lay a deer low, and by the time I found him Dinky would be all over it! He was too small to do any damage but that dead deer would be rockin back and forth with Dinky's teeth stuck in his hide somewhere, ha - makes me laugh to remember. I took him with me so much my wife was jealous - what a deal. Anyway, here's a few pic's just so you know why it's funny.

Looks like a dog that loved deer. Looks like he thought he was bigger than he was. He looks proud of that deer leg. He probably knawed on that leg for a while. LOL
Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Nice bow Ron. Did you use osage as a power lam under the boo too? Or is the boo thicker there at the handle? Adn where did you get your ipe? Its one wood I have yet to try.
-
Lennie
It is osage for the power lam. I will send you a PM maybe we can make a trade?
I promise you will like it if you try it. :o
Ron
-
You're going to MOJAM right? I'd definitely be interested in a trade.
-
Hey Ron - sorry bout that. Wasn't trying to hijack your thread, was kinda dippin into the Canadian blend last night. Oh yea, I don't throw the legs to the dogs anymore - have since learned their is good sinew in there ;D.
-
No problem. I didn't take it that way.
See ya
Ron
-
Ron, I like the ebony arrowheads. Are they inlayed? Good looking bow.
-
Huntersim
I just cut them out on the bandsaw and thined them as much as possible on the belt sander and sanding block. Then glued them on. Then sanded them smooth and as thin as possible again. Then I burnished them and finished them with the bow with Tru oil.
Thanks
Ron

LMAO Cowboy ;D
You forget that these little dogs are just as much Wolf as the big ones,i've seen yorkshire terriers with ribbons in there hair literally tear Rats to pieces!
I once saw a jack russel terrier stand up to a pair of Foxhounds, the hounds soon backed down after the little bugger showed he meant business ;D
Dogs are all heart and Courage.
Nice Bow jignfrog,Chase is a great name for it!i like that :D.

Thanks Loki

Bravo on the bow. I ruined a lot of ipe in my early bowyering days. I wouldn't mind see a Chaser pic or two and hearing more about him. I too am a softy on these issue. Two hounds watch me do all my bowyering and are in the woods with me constantly.

I will see what I can do. I am glad to hear you have a couple of pals you can spend time with. It will be next week before I will be able to post again. I will be on the lake. But I will try to find a good picture and description.
Thanks
