This is my new playland for a few days. I'm so close to the Venezuellan Bordor I can about spit on it. My flight from Bogota to Valledupar got delayed 6 hours so by the time we got there it was late. We did what our State Dept says American citezens shouldn't do, drive at night this close to where the FARC Guerrilas are based, like where i'm working. I stayed in a local Hotel in a very dangerous town the first night and then they made me move into a cottage at the Mine site where they have Americans stay. I'll try to post some pictures this weekend when many people aren't working here. I'm not supposed to take pictures here but, you know, a tourist has to take pictures. Cool birds, snakes and large iguanas everywhere. I'll have more pictures on Facebook because of the format size.

any good wood there ;D
-
Man, there's wood everywhere, it's a jungle.
-
Hey Eddie take care of the ol boy down there if you have to join join up with the winner.Ron

Man, there's wood everywhere, it's a jungle.
i mean any bow worthy wood
-
See any jaquar's yet? Keep yourself outa trouble while there. Looking forward to the pics.
-
Keep yer eyes open. The way I hear it, a Gringo could get bought and sold real easy down that way. Be careful now.
-
Eddie watch your back those people don't play.
If they get you can I have your bows?
Lane
-
Eddie,
I'm gonna sound like your teacher did when you were a kid, "Behave!" follow the rules and be safe. I'm from Mexico, it's dangerous in Mexico and I don't ever see myself going back, but not as dangerous as Colombia.
But if...... Since Lane called dibbs on your bows, may I have your arrows? O:)
-
My wife will probablly divvy up the bows and arrows, Lord knows there is plenty. ;D I just told her to make sure the Company keeps me on the clock, I get paid by the hour ;) The internet is so bad I'll have to post pictures when I get home.
-
Well darn on the picts but we'll wait. Missed ya for a day was gittin kinda skeert ;D.
-
Make a few sharp rocks and tie them to sticks. Maybe the word will get out what kind of dangerous nut you are and everyone will leave you alone. ;D
-
Dang it Mullet,,you watch your hind quarters down there! :o Those folks aint civilized! Do what you have to and git your booty home :-\
-
Thanks guys, Look's like I'm flying out Tuesday by way of Panama. Never been there either :-\ Didn't take as long to straighten this out afterall.
-
Will you be in Panama any length of time? Our kids lived in Panama City for 5 years and Mary and I visited several times. Beautiful place.
George

Glad to hear you are still safe,Take care. :)

George, I fly in at 4PM and fly out at 8:46PM. I'll probablly hang out in an airport bar. ;D I've had two beers since I left. Everything I eat or drink had to be brought in for me.
Thanks, Pappy, I'm ready to get home. ;)
-
Have a safe trip home Eddie. And , uh , post something when you get in.

Too bad, there's some nice places to see in Panama City. That flight to Miami goes over Cuba and it was almost always rough there. We got so we flew out of Houston to avoid it. This time of year there's often bad weather in the gulf. I'm sure you're used to it. Have a safe flight.

yall can have the bows, I want the wocks

Here's some pictures of the town and peoples houses. A lot of the houses were made by tieing small saplings in a crosshatch and then taking the clay we walked on and packing the little 8" squares with clay till it dried. A lot of the places without walls looked just like the Seminole Dwellings,, kinda makes you wonder? ::) Any mountains in the picture is Venezuela.
-
Here's a few more from town,
-
This little town is amazing. Amazing that it is still on the map. The town's income is derived from smuggling gasoline from Venezuela. Almost everybody in town has gas stored in 5 gal containers or more in there houses. They sell it for about $12 for 5 gallons, right beside the people selling and cooking BBQ with propane burners. The whole town is one, big, firebomb.
-
The airport in Valledupar and as close as I got to Panama City,, the bar in the airport drinking Panama Beer. In the far background of the shot in through the window is the skyline of Panama City. ::)
-
It sure would be nice to live a simple life again, but that looks a little complicated. The house in picture 103 looks like my uncle's house.
-
nice photos Eddie. Shows just how well we have it
-
Justin, that place is a restruant and local tavern.
-
No kidding, I was amazed when I saw the living conditions of some of these people, nothing like Brazil. After dark none of the locals ventured outside, just the bad guys and people driving fast.
-
Those pics remind me of how thankful I am to be in the great USA!!
-
That was intersting Eddie. Man that looks poor! Reminds me of these border towns..
-
Cool pics Eddie, Are those rags sealing the lids on the gas bombs,,,,,,I mean tanks? :o :o :o Talk about a ticking time bomb ::)
-
Yea, Keenan, they are rags. It's hard to believe this town hasn't burnt to the ground. Here's a few more;
-
Hey Eddie, Are any of those iguanas big enough for skin backings? ;D ;D
-
Keenan, I saw some 4-5 feet long. The one in the picture was about 2 1/2' long. I saw a few Boa's in the 8' to 10' range.
-
Thanks for the pictures, Eddie! Looks really wet and muggy, but the mountains look fantastic!
-
Patrick, It is really a beautiful place. It is really too bad that it is just too dangerous to go out exploring on your own. You can see how poor some of the people are so a lot of them wouldn't think twice about robbing a Gringo or worse. It was about 90 dgs and humidity around 80%. And we had to wear longsleeve shirts in the mine.
-
That whole town could go up like Guernica with a small fire
-
Town? Uh....ok.....was the shack with the tin roof the Mayor's house? I would hate to see the jail. I would hate to be in it!
If it weren't for the Mountains, I would almost say you were in Indiantown....... ;D
So how was the cervasa in Panama? Did you sample the empanadas in the case next to you? Or were that something different? Well it looks like you were in "Good" company while you worked, or what ever it is you did down there....... ::) Finished a new book did you? Aw, why didn't you just reach down pick up that beautiful little cuddly Centipede, and pet it. Or that friendly Iguana.....with the sharp little teeth, and long cat like claws.......I am very familiar with what an iguana can do with those claws, and teeth! :o They do taste like chicken though, so I have been told by a friend of mine who used to go to Nicaragua to Dove hunt, before the Sandinistas took over.
Well glad that you made it back, and I don't have to send the $7.50 in nickels that I collected for your release to the leftist guerrilla's. But if they had kidnapped you I would have helped Cathy, get rid of all that ol rock, and pieces of scrap wood in the shed, and the beer too, and that ol clunky jeep, and the guns, and the bows....... You know so in case she was contacted she would have the cash ready to get you released..... ::) Yeah, Eddie I would do that for you, it's just the kind of guy I am. It's no big deal, it's just me.......always ready to help out..... ;D So are there any mines in Somali, you might get sent to? I could you know, keep an eye on your stuff, till you got back from there...... ;D ;D ;D
Glad you got back ok, and man, you were near the border. I hope they weren't mining underneath the border, and taking Venezuela's coal..... ;D ;D
-
Thank you for the tour Eddie, I really enjoyed it.
Lane
-
glad you made it back bro! i'll call tomorrow and get some of the juicier details. by the look of the town, you could live like king off $100 bill for at least a year.
-
Nice show ! Thanks Eddie ' Frank
-
Were you over working or visiting?Looks similar to Peru.We spent 2 weeks there(Peru) in Jan. 09 and saw a lot of the backstreet areas.Lot of rough living conditions but to be honest all the people we had the pleasure of meeting were very happy and content.Looks like a cool place to visit.have a great day-Lloyd
-
Loyd;
I was working. That's why I had to listen to HR and move into the secure compound. The guys I was working with lived mostly in that town and were some of the nicest people I met there. They were also some of the ones that told me I needed to move into the compound for my safety.
-
It was about 90 dgs and humidity around 80%. And we had to wear longsleeve shirts in the mine.
You Poor Thang You...try wearing Long Sleeved FRC Shirts...and FRC Jeans all Day...every Day at Work...no matter how damned Hot I know....They suck.... ;D
