Monday Randy Clark and I got us some bow wood. ;D
If I can get the pix to load you will be able to see for your self.
We met a 6:00 AM a little ways from the house to get the Elm.
It was blown down by the tornado that came through this area.
It was a big tree. The grain was very good so... We took our saws and just cut it in half.
The halfs were much to big to load so we sawed it into quarters. These we could load.. but just bearly.
OK lets see if the first pix will load

those look nice! I need to cut some more wood myself but im too lazy ;D
-
OK the first pix loaded.
Here is pix # 2.
By the way, Randy is a big-o-boy and he has some sort of 20 year old Husky saw.
He used to be a logger so he knows how to use it. His saw just ate that big elm log.
Here is a close up of the end of one of the quarters.
-
Here is a pix of the bark on the log. See how straight it is.
That is why we were able to saw it up. Dont know if we could have busted an Elm log that big anyway.
-
let me warn you......if i ever see those things in person, you may never see them again >:D, well at least not straight without a string of course ;)
-
After we got that elm loaded we headed to the house and unladed three on the four elm quarters.
They are about 7' long.
Then we headed to Mrs. Terry's Osage Patch. ;D
I spotted this tree several years back but let it grow for a few more years.
That is Randy next to the tree.
-
Oh my god, i almost had a heart attack ;D
-
Sorry I have to do this one post at a time but we are on a dial-up connection and it does not work any other way.
Here is Randy carring out the last quarter split from the first log.
It was hot by this time and we were about beat.
-
Here is the final load.
Four quarter splits and two smaller logs that came from the top of the tree.
Randy said he felt like he was in Osage Heaven. ;D He had never see a Osage tree before. ::)
This place is covered n Osage. He brought up someting that I had not thought of.
I will start a new post on that subject.
It was fun.

P.S. The two smaller logs are arrow straight about 5" across and 7' long. ;D

That Alabama gold title brings back some good old memories David. I'm sure you guys busted your "A" that day and was worth it :).

David,
I can't tell you how much I appreciate your generosity and friendship.I've been sweating every day since, getting this stuff processed.I'm really glad now that we stopped with just one tree.I would love to have a barn load of staves but I've learned to get a little at a time and maby wait untill cooler weather.
Thanks a bunch,for a great day.

Ha, Ha, Ha, Cracker ;D ;D ;D
How about a trade ::)
David
Want to?
-
Yes I do.
I found a guy that can take those hunks of brass and cut them into thin disk for me.
He uses a lathe of some sort. They look real nice and should work fine for knife making.
Just in case you don't already know...they are most difficult to cut with a hacksaw. ::)
Were we not going to trade Osage for Brass the first time?
