Title: Tillering my first osage??? More pictures added

This is a 64" bow. The picture shows it at 20" and at 51#. I am trying for 55#@28" or there abouts. Just thought some fresh and experienced eyes might be helpful before I go any further. I am going to put some tip overlays on at this point also. Thanks, David

Looking a little hingy midlimb on that right limb.

I am no one to give advise, but I like to call a few shots, and see if the experts agree, but for my own training.

I would remove material out fo the fades to midlimb on the right limb.

Left looks good.

Left limb looks good.  Right limb needs scraping from fade to mid and then from mid to tip but leave about 3 to 4 inches mid-limb alone.

Left looks to be overpowering the right slightly...but then some like the lower limb a tad stronger.
I agree with the first reply about the hint of hinge, but of course it could just be an optical illusion, the limb does look thinner there.
Run a pair of calipers down the limb see if there is a dip there maybe.

Where it looks like it starting to hinge is an area of some pin knots.

It is about the same thickness as above and below, just wider.


Also have a small rotted knot that goes in about half the distance of the handle that will need to be filled.
I tried cutting a slight shelf on this bow also...?

If that is not a hinge, but just a result of the whoop de do and camera angle combined, then it looks very close. Maybe a touch stiff just past that pin knot cluster toward the tip. You may need to weaken the whole lower limb just a bit. I like the bottom limb to be slightly stronger, but it may be too much of a good thing if you weaken the top limb much more. That knot in the handle should not cause any trouble for you. I'd just soak it with super glue to stabalize it and seal it from moisture getting in there.

Looks like you need to get the near handle wood moving more if you want a 28" draw on a 64" stave. Jawge

So, you'd concentrate on the fades out to just before mid limb George?

Here is an updated picture. I have sanded some near the fades and then the outer 1/3 on the right limb.

I think I'll try a little more sanding on that upper (right) limb on the outer 1/3 and then exercise it out to 27". If it comes along ok I'll try putting some arrows through it.
