....Now this bow was a real tillering nightmare, you'll see the top limb :o :o the bottom one has a twist right where the S is and that surely made things interesting, couldn'd do any reflexing because the bow would just pop of the form anytime I tryed so I just let it be, the bottom limb finished strait the top (that had deflex) pretty much stayed
finished with a 50/50 mix of linseed oil and shellac wrapped handle of hemp, guava overlays

Holy Crap Manny!I can't believe somebody would post such a hideous bow! :o But,Wow,I sure do like it.That's cool. You need to make a tillering tree or make some friends so we can see some full draw pictures. ;)
-
Hey Manny,You can post 6 pictures in the same post.Just keep hitting browse.
-
Man! Just when I was thinking that the character bow I am making would stand a chance in BOM, you post this beauty. Maybe I should wait 'till next month to post the bow? ;) It's amazing what you do with those curves, Manny. Wiatin' to see full draw.
Sean
-
I'm looking forward to the full draw pic to see how you handled that deflex in the upper limb. I know that had to be quite a challenge to tiller.
Should be an interesting June BOM...
-
thanks guys,
hey mullet I got a tillering tree, but I never like when people post pictures of full draw like that, I like to see the bow drawn like it's ment to be, ...better make some friends ::) ::), waiting for someone to come home to get pictures taken.
6 pictures at one time ? you crazy I'd get all tangled up :o :o
-
:D :D :D :D
-
WOW!Thats cool.Beautiful bow.Love the tips, handle wrap and that profile is just amazing love top see full draw pic.Great work.Hammertime.
-
Incredible bow Manny. It does make a more aesthetic picture to take pictures while it is drawn by a person. I kind of like pictures on the tillering tree so everyone can see the tiller better. Justin
-
All I can say is great work!
VB
-
Beautiful, Manny. You are inspiring me. I need to start on my snaky guava. I see from the close-up of the handle area the longitudinal grain doesn't matter. I was wondering about that. Pat
-
WOW!!!!
-
sorry I went surfing and played a bit of beach volleyball so missed the opportunity of taking full draw shots,...maybe tomorow ;D ;D ;D
-
Bob's bow is a gorgeous "sister bow" to my bow, Manny (they grew up and evolved together - LOL) You are the "Guava Guru", my friend.
-
Oh I love to see this snaky pieces of wood turning into a bow.
Great, Manny! Thanks for sharing pics!
-
I havn't been around here for near as long as some of you guys, but that has to be the craziest looking bow I've seen posted here! ;D It had to be a real challenge...like everyone else, I'm impatiently awaiting those full draw pics. ;)
-
Manny I have seen some of your whacked character bows over the last couple of years but this may take the cake! Nice! If I could give ya high five I would. ;D
-
this bow same as the otherone you posted: just u n b e l i e v a b l e ! ! ! really nice...
frank
-
ps: i've seen many beatifull bows being posted here, but some of you guys are so outstanding that it's difficult to find words everytime!
-
Another stunning bow, Manny. Unbelieveable to me that such a stick can be tillered. You deserve time on the beach after making these two bows ;D But, now that you're done looking forward to full draw pics ;)
Stan
-
Awesome job on a crazy piece of wood, I give you credit for even attempting to make a bow out of it.
-
You ruled last June by tying with yourself with two entries for BOM. Looks like a real contender this June, too. Looking forward to that full draw.
-
sorry guys, don't mean to be a tease with the full draw pictures, I'm itchy to get them myself ;D
-
Very nice Manny. Pieces of art like this, that also shoot , do a whole lot to promote wooden bows .
Ralph
-
You are the GUAVA KING!
-
wow! just flat out unbelievable! I wish I had your tillering skill Manny. I can't wait to see the money pic :)
-
:o :o :o :o :o...Thats just INSANE! SWEET!.....Brian
-
actually, manny, the first time i ever heard of GUAVA was here on your bows; don't think anyone has used it over here in germany...
would you be so kind and tell me - and other german folks eventually - a few words about this wood, maybe compare it to other better know bow woods??
thanks, frank
ps: drank guava juice on a trip to southeast-asia two month ago
-
DUDE! awesome! all has been said. waiting for THE pic.
-
Doesn't someone want to vacation in Hawaii, lookup Mannie, and TAKE PICTURES OF THOSE BOWS! ;D ;D ;D
-
You buying the tictetes Greg? ;) ;D
-
Yeah Greg, I'll go if you buy the ticket. ;D
Sean
-
Manny, quit being so modest. We know that you have tillered that stave to transform into a perfect circular tiller at full draw. We would expect nothing less from you. ;)
J. D.
-
That bow is spectacular. The hawaiin goods look down and smile at you. If Ghost dog don't want it I will take it off your hands for sure. Great looking bow and I too realllyyyyyyyyyy want to see it at full draw.
Ron
-
Like everyone else has said...WOW....AMAZING !!!!
-
Here's the full draw pics, not the best quality, but you gotta take what you're given sometimes ;D

Wow Mannie, that was worth the wait! Great example of what I'm sure is a well tillered bow, but with the natural curvature of that top limb...doesn't have the typical visual look we're all used to seeing from a well tillered bow.
Great job! ;)
-
Beautiful, Manny - looks like the two roads around each end of Oahu :D Great FD pics and they will be on Page 13 of my TBD pages as well. Bob, I know you have to be every bit as excited as this ol' hoss is about my Guava.
-
Manny, your still the king of character. In my book that means your more than just a great bowyer. It takes some serious skill to see the bow and skillfully extract it from a twisted narly piece of wood thats full of dips and dives.
Most would give up befor even starting and the few that venture to attempt the near impossible, end up frustrated and quit. But for the select few that are brave and tenatious the reward is a one of a kind head turning true work of art.
Congratulations on the task that few could pull off.
Nice to see ya still taken the challenge. Keenan
Ps, Ghost You are one lucky Dog !!!
-
Thanks guys,
-
extraordinary!
frank
-
Thanks for the full draws, Manny. Got you bookmarked for June Self BOM (Dejavu?? :D)
-
Thanks frank.
dejavu sounds like fun :D :D :D
-
Beautiful bow, Manny. The tiller is excellent. :) Jawge
-
Sorry for making more work for you Don ::)
But I just got words that the bow developed a compression fracture in the S section of the lower limb.
That makes it not fit for BOM cosideration.
sorry again
Manny
-
Thanks for being so forthright Manny. Sorry to hear that.
J. D. Duff
-
I'm sorry to hear that Manny. If the fractures are localized it may be repairable with rawhide and an overwrap.
-
sorry about that!
frank
-
Ho no, the bow is just fine she still shoot just as good ;D
-
Wow Manny, don't know how I missed that earlier, that is great. That has me written all over it.
I love it.Good job on a tough piece of wood.Glad you could save it. :) :)
Pappy
-
Well Pappy, the bow is in california ecctually ;D
The owner told me of the fret, but sayd that the bow hasn't changed it's shooting manners, and from my experiance with some of my older ones, it should last forever still.
-
Sorry to hear that, Manny and Ghost Dog. I am happy to say mine is still doing fine (and I'm doing a little better with it - getting used to where i have to "pick a spot"). Hope all turns out well Ghost Dog. I'd hate for anything to happen to any of my bows (naturally - even though "stuff" does happen, I know) but I would really hate for anything serious to happen to "Hula Girl", she's a FUN kinda girl ;)!
-
Yeah I hate to hear things like that :( :(... but the bow is still going from what Bob's telling me.
I have 2 old bows that have huge compression fractures, but are still shooting well after few years of using and even hunting.
I'm gonna use those 2 for a thread that I'll start net week and see how far I can bend the before they break, I need to learn how really fatal those fractures are for the bows, .....it should be fun ;D ;D
-
Great Looking Bow , I love Guava bows, but I can't get staves anymore due to all the hurricanes in Florida must guava trees flew away and it takes several years for guava to grow, it is a very tight grain wood hard and at the same time flexible, it makes very nice looking bows, but the wood must be very dry before you work on it.
I will buy a stave is you have one Northshore, I thought you lived in Fla because of the trees, LOL
Or I can trade for rattle snake skins, or deer skins, deer antlers, That bow would look awesome if covered with rattle snake skins.
I also have Exotic woods from Africa and south America for risers or lamination bows, like sapele ,blood wood, Cherry, teak, zebra wood, coco bolo and many other beautiful woods. I can trade for a guava stave or a gourd wood stave.
Let me know if you can help, Robinwho.
-
Glad to hear of others that use Guava :)
How long do you let them cure ?... I was just tempering a bow that was down to dimentions for 6 months and still showed beads of moisture.
I'm fixing to go harvest staves for Gordon , Pat, and Ken, I'll pick you something up
-

Guava need to be cured at least 1 year, the wood is very tight and the core takes at least that long to cure, in a dry environment, in a high humidity environment like south Fla even 2 years is necessary.
-
Manny - be careful on that test with those bows! I'd hate to read, "Hawaiian bowyer gets shot with bow (parts)!"
-
I was coming to that conclusion Robinwho, ...so far I was never really able to work on a completly dry bow ::) ::)
-
Don't they split vertically when they are not dry ? It has for me , several times.
Is like working with mangrove or sea grape wood it has to be real dry.
Know anybody who sell guava wood ?
-
I've being thinking of trying Sea grape, it looks like a real good wood.
Never split verticaly for me, just some longitudinal small cracks if I'm belly tempering.
I've being selling/trading Guava staves for the past couple of years
-

PM me then about a guava stave.
Sea grape is good but hard wood to work with, I have used it mainly in laminate bows, but they last forever.
-
Finally another guava bower! I have made a few guava bows and they seem to take alot more to keep them from breaking. Sorry to hear that it happened to you as well. :'(
-
WOAH!!!!
-
Man I miss Manny's Guava bows. That one was pretty sick stuff too. I need to see that kind of craziness every once and a while to challenge myself to try something a little more difficult. Danny
-
Manny good to see a bow from you again.i was hoping for a signature manny pose on top of a Stump or something like that.fantastic bow man. The strawberry guava stave I got from you made a beautlfull bow.thats been a few years back. Hope to see more from you in the near future.your work is a pleasure to look at.
-
Manny posted this back in 2007. He's been attending to family issues in Italy for quite some time now. Sure miss that guy!
