The first bow I tillered in 8 month gave me quite a few problems ::)
first of all even if it was taken down to just about this thickness for over 6 months when I went to bely temper it it showed a lot of moisture in it.
a knot and matching elbow on each limb about 2 3rds took some time to get the wood to bend around them and tillering was quite a challenge.
stained it with my homemade Lava stain ( and did a poor job at it too ::) ::)) finished with spar urethane the grip is wrapped Jute overlays are Zebrawood

Looks pretty good Many. Lots of character in that piece of wood. Justin
-
Bernie is going to love that bow!
-
It looks alive! :D,beautiful Bow.
-
That stuff is really nice wood, the grain is great and I think your finish looks excellent. You sure make a nice bow.
VB
-
Another nice one, Manny. Bernie will love it. Now the snaky arrow I gave him will have a companion. ;D Pat
-
I'm impressed!! That looks great Manny - I don't know how you guys tiller those snakes. Just out of curiosity: What diameter tree did you get that bow out of?
-
Cowboy this was a tiny tree, the width of the handle is the all tree, about 1 1/2"
thanks everyone for the nice words
-
I have been watching the progress of this beautiful bow, by grace of a mutual friend taking and posting a few pics on OutdoorCore. I captured the pics and posted them on the Gallery Pages (13 and 14 I believe) of my website. I not only Love the bow Manny made for me , I am honored and humbled by it (and I can hardly stand the wait for it - especially now that I know it is ready - :D) Bless your heart and your skills, Manny. Thanks for the extra pics. What graceful lines. Don't y'all just love those tips too?
-
It really is a nice looking bow, talented craftmanship demonstrated all over it! ;)
-
Oooooo I want one :D Bernie you are a lucky man, she is a beauty. Braced profile looks good, can't wait to see full draws of both these bows. Great as usual Manny.
-
Dadgum, an 1 1/2" tree? and here I thought you had to have at least a six inch wide stave to make a two in wide bow. Wow again - master of the Guava ;D.
-
Simply wonderful, Manny. Very much looking forward to pics at full draw.
Stan
-
I am so "Antsy"! ;D I do understand Manny having things to do with it yet though (pics, full draw, etc. - NOT your full draw, Manny, just the bow's full draw - LOL), and besides, the anticipation is exquisite too (I keep telling myself).
-
Outstanding bow manny!
-
Simply wonderful, Manny. Very much looking forward to pics at full draw.

don't mean to be a tease with this full draw pictures, just that time is very limited, and need to catch someone to do it ;D
-
Manny, you are one talented bowyer and you have a big heart. I'm glad you are part of this community.
-
Gordon, way to nice, ..thanks :)
-
I think Gordon's pretty astute there - as usual :)
-
very gnarly. :o looks like that Guava is great wood. I'm quite sure that it doesn't grow here though >:(

-
I'm going post office right now Bernie ;D, thanks Greg
-
I think I am hyperventillating - I better go take one of those little baby asprins, or an extra dose of BP meds - LOL Thanks for the heads up, Manny.
-
That bow looks sweet Manny! ;D Nice Job.
-
Looks pretty darn good for such a character piece of wood. Quite a bit of wood not bending on the limb tips. Justin
-
Dejavu all over again.
-
Yeah Justin, the wood was handeling the bending not taking set, so I kept the narrow outher limbs a bit stiff for string angle a performance
-
That's a penny in the picture

Like I said, i love those tips!
-
Beautiful Manny....Love it...
-
Thanks Jimmy, sorry I didn't answer your e-mail, but some how deleted it
-
"Hula Girl" arrived, safe and sound, today and is more beautiful than I even dreamed, Manny. I'll be a good (and safe) ol' coot and let her acclimate for a couple weeks (as you suggested) while I just "pet" her (LOL) and make a nice new string for her. I am truly so moved by the grace and beauty of this bow, Manny, as well as your generousity, with your hard work and skill. I'm on cloud nine! Gotta go look some more! ;D
-
Wow that was quick, glad it's there safely, and glad you like it, ...yeah, my photografy is quite poor ::) ::),...maybe you can do her some justice
-
Thanks Manny, I can't remember what was in the email. ::) See what happens when your hair turns gray? ;D Ma halo
Bernie, I'm envious. You have a beautiful Polynesian weapon.....WOW.....
-
Manny, I know how sincere Bernie is and I feel his joy. Congrats to both of you. ;)
Bernie, will she(Hula Girl) be ready to shoot at ATAR? I'll bet $1 you bring her! ;D Pat
-
That was fast indeed, Manny - almost blew me away - with pleasure - LOL
You do know me, Pat - thank you. I think she should be, and you'd win that bet in any case. If I can do her justice in shooting I might even shoot the primitive class as well as the regular at ATAR, just for kicks, since this is the first year you can shoot in more than one class there. I should get some more low spine Canes made up - but if not I have some low spine Ramin dowels that I bet she'll like - and one real crooked Sourwood Arrow from "a friend", that shoots straighter than I do :D
-
5/16" ramin should spine out of 'Hula Girl", when is ATAR ? like to hear what Pat thinks of the bow
-
2nd weekend in July, Manny. I'm pretty sure Pat would love this bow - I wouldn't hesitate to bet a month's Retirement pay on it. However, he told me he can't make ATAR this year - The Rascal. Probably won't get to see him until next year at Hickory now - unless we get together somewhere along the line - depends on how bad he wants to meet "Hula Girl" ;). More pics before too awfully long if all goes well, guys.
-
I am going to show you Mannny's "Hula Girl" in action in her new home in NC. I've had her about a week and a half but she needed to acclimate (taking sunbaths in our climate). I also made a purty white, black, and yellow Flemish Twist string, with fur strips for her. I have grown to love her even more during this time of just handling her. Yesterday I served and put nocks on the string and it was time for our first shooting foray together. I'll tell you about that later. Please remember I was nervous as a teenager on a first date and we were just getting used to each other. I will post more pics latter but here are a few teasers this morning.

She's looking good, Bernie. That's a big jump from Hawaii to eastern NC. By the way, Bernie, Where is your skirt? ;D Pat
-
LOL - I've retired it and am thinking of putting it and the Pom-pom up as an "offered item" for collectors, in next year's 4th annual tradgang.com St. Jude Auction - now hush, Pat ;) - Skirts are only a once a half century thing! ::)
It is my true pleasure to add to Manny's post on this bow. (The bow means a great deal to me, as do you guys opinions of it, and of friend Manny.)

As I said, First time out. I find I have to Cant well and still pick a spot well to the right to hit where I would like to with pretty much all of my wood primitive/lam/self bows. Maybe I'll work around that some day :-\ . The arrows you see with the "tracers" on them are Ramin dowel shafts (in light spine) that I made. The three with Fl green nocks and feathers are alum (shhhh - just to "see how she liked them"). AND the one right in the center with the tracer is a Cane arrow in light spine I made - it flew like a dart. (I gotta make some more light spined Canes - LOL)
Let me say my "go-to-bow" is a Adcock ACS and it is a fast little rascal that I shoot fairly well (when I pay attention ;)) so I have an idea of fast, smooth, and hard hitting. That having been said, this "Hula Girl", my Guava Bow from Manny, is a fast spitting , smooth shooting, hit like a veritable Frieght Train, full of authority bow - and I love shooting it, as well as love it period. Too bad everybody couldn't shoot it (or one like it.) Thanks for looking. Maybe some more pics from our first outing, later, if you want. :)
-
Thats a beaut Manny, don't know how I missed it earlier,I know ber643 is loving that.I love the tips and the finish looks great to me.You know I am parshell to snaky bow anyway.Great job. :)
Pappy
-
Glad you like her Bernie, hopefully she'll give you years of good shooting,....and, how about a deer? ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Based on that arrow grouping I'd say the guava bow acclimated to NC and Bernie's shooting style just fine. You make us proud Manny!
-
Thank you, Manny. I'm sure of the firtst and I can always hope for the second - :)
-
Very nice! Great setting, too!
J. D.
-
Manny, that is a beautiful bow with a great tiller. Bernie, enjoy it in good health. Jawge

Thanks, JD and Jawge. Here are a couple more full Draw views - taken from the other side, with my shooting tower behind me:

Nice group Bernie! I think that is one of the wildest looking grip sections I have seen in a while. I too enjoy the snaky bow Manny made for my son and me..
Rich
-
It is kinda wild, isn't it, Rich? It feels comfortable though. speaking of that, I was surprised to notice in all the pics shooting "HG" that I (apparently) automatically closed my bow hand. I usually only circle my top two fingers and thumb and let the bottom two fingers just be relaxed. I need to watch that closer when shooting this one and my other wood bows. Perhaps it is something I am doing with all of those, or only certain ones that it feels like I should - kinda funny to see it. It might just be because it is new to me - and could even explain some of the spread of my shots - might be gripping too hard. Sorry to ramble on - out loud thinking.
-
Nothing wrong with your grip Bernie, that type of handle will make you heel the bow, and that's how you want to shoot it, ..if I pick up a recurve,or what they call longbows nowadays ::) ;D ::) ;D I automatcly have my last 2 fingers open on the grip....once you get used to shooting this style you'll be surprised how accurate a crooked stick can be ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Thats a nice bow. marlon
-
Ah - I wondered about that too, Manny - I know it felt natural while I was shooting - and I think I do that with my Dano snakey bow too, thinking back on it.
-
wow manny excellent job. that stick is a freak.
-
:D "Don't you wish your girlfriend ... " er, bow "was a freak like me? ...," er, mine? ;) (Now, where are those musical note emoticons?)
