Title: working hard on my trade bow
Post by: DEllis on March 29, 2011, 01:59:48 am
I'll just say it is hickory and will be a bend through the handle bow.
Some pics. Note the hard work clearly going on in the last pic ;D Gotta let it happen at it's own pace eh ;D
At this point I decided it needed a bit more time to dry, so to be continued.........

The only thing I'm noticing is that it's warm enough for you to be outside in just a t-shirt.

But other than that, nice bow.

It has warmed up nicely here the last week or so........up to 12*C in the daytime......unfortunately that means less bow building time cause the work season is upon me again. :-\
Eric, I actually am just in the process of building my house.......been at it for about 2 years......siding this fall I hope.
Thanks for the kind words guys,
SiongSA, I kinda like my little chunk of the north too. :)

best of luck with the house, I hope you get it finished soon. I know having it not complete can wear on you. your last picture shows you know how to keep it in perspective. lol

Acutus, yup the snow is getting a bit tiresome for me too......been a long winter.
Eric, I don't fret it too much as a matter of fact ;D
Caius, I heard Alberta was cold lately, don't worry the mud is on it's way ;D
I hear ya cowboy. ;D
Thanks for the replies guys.

Title: Re: working hard on my trade bow FINISHED
Post by: DEllis on April 20, 2011, 12:42:39 am
Did a bit more on the trade bow.......pretty much broke in now with at least 150 shots taken. String follow stands at 1.25" just unstrung and after a relax is back to 1/2". Still need to do tip overlays and finish work........to be continued...........

Two thumbs up Darcy... Looks really nice. It is nice to see another guy using pink feathers... I have issues finding any other color in the woods so I had to go to pink ones like Fred Eichler!
Great bow

Got the trade bow all finished up. Here're some specs.
Hickory, heat treated belly.
64 1/4" nock to nock.
1 3/8" wide.
Elk antler tips 5/16" wide.
Slightly narrowed and slightly working grip.
54#@28"(shouldn't give too much away there ;))
wool wrap with elk hide grip.
TS-1 string(like fast flight plus)16 strands with yarn silencers(matching the handle wrap)
As it is a white wood and needs some sort of camo for hunting purposes I painted designs on the back in crafters acrylic. It is a bit crude, but looks like something a half wild indian might have done, if he was in a hurry ::), so should fit the primitive catagory OK ;D
tru oil finish.
I shot this bow a good bit and it holds at less than 1.5" of string follow when just unstrung. I reported before in another thread that I was getting 174 fps.......which I was but it was with about 9.25 GPP I was very carefull to make sure I had an arrow weight of 10GPP for the final chrony test. I have trouble (being a half breed hobbit/garden gnome) shooting consistently at 28" of draw but did manage an average speed of aproximately 160FPS, which I think is OK, not a barn burner, but no dawg either. Very comfortable to shoot and hits where I look. I'll let the recipient take the full draw pic. ;)
Anyway, here are some pics. I'll probably get this on it's way by the end of the week, I hope the new owner likes it.

Uh, not to complain, Darcy...but your thumb was covering my name in that one photo.  Not that it matters, just wanted to make sure it was spelled right.

 >:D

Nice bow, nice color scheme, sweet handle with the light cord wraps.

Great looking bow!! Are the limbs pretty much the same thickness from the end of the fades to tips or do they taper. I'm about to build my first from a red oak board that is about 1 3/4" wide and really like the way you did yours.

Thanks,

David

Thanks David, and welcome to the forum. :)
The limbs taper from the handle to approximately 8 inches(bow is gone so I can't measure it) from the tips where they begin to taper thicker again. Also it narrows a bit at the handle and works there a tiny bit. Anytime your front view profile is fairly parallel you need to taper toward the tips. Only a pyramid shaped limb can be one even thickness from fade to tips and still let all(or most) of the wood do it's fair share of work, as a rule.
