Title: Finally built a shooter!
Post by: cowboy on May 30, 2007, 12:52:35 am
Kilt this tree bout six months ago while visiting NC. It's a 66" n/n Hickory - pulls 53#'s @ 28". My eighth attemp at making a bow, a couple of broken one's and some not so nice one's later - I can finally go huntin. Oh yeah, I had that aha! moment some of you were talking about with the Flemish string too. takes about 2" of set after shooting, goes back to about 1 3/4" after awhile - that's fine by me right now. ;D

Was going to put a strike plate on but gave up. Had the bow finished minus the handle wrap, couldn't limber up that peice of cow horn to fit right. At what point do you guys put that on and how to go about it? Gracias!

Nice looking bow cowboy.  You did a fine job on the tiller and a great job on the paint job.
That poor dang chicken looks like somebody has been trying to fletch arrows without much luck.  ;D
And how did I know a guy going by cowboy would be sporting that facial hair.   ;D Justin

Thanks guys, but I can't part with the chickens - I know they %&^%& on every thing but I sure like them fresh eggs.

Nice looking bow you have there, looks like a good job all around. Ready for some of those beautiful points you make!  ;)

Us Tn. boys usually have hounds in the back of our trucks, but chickens are good... ;D   You sure that chicken isn't one of those yard ornaments like my grandma used to have? ;D

Nice looking bow and decoration, from a determined man - I like that. Your Full draw will appear on my TBD pages (#12) sometime today (hopefully) As every year I am deeply involved in tradgangs3rd Annual St. Judes Auction, so i may not be as fast as usual - but it will be there.

Very nice looking bow, Cowboy! Great job!
As for the set (and I don't know about anyone else), but I would measure from the back of the bow, not the belly, giving the bow about 1 1/4" of set. Is that just after shooting?     Oh, and nice looking stick in the truck, is that going to be your next bow? ;D

Wow!! Compliments comming in from coast to coast and all in between overnight! I really appreciate you guys - inspiration piled on top of inspiration, ya'll know that's going to cause me to build another one, and another, and........ :)

Sorry Justin, me and you were posting at the same moment: I'm thinking she needs to bend a little more around the fades. The paint job I noticed in the last PA magazine and kinda took a liking to.
Hey Sparky - man I knew you were lurking around out there, prechiate the hands on help at OJAM! that kinda gave me a kick start even though I screwed up that peice of Osage.
All you other bow building veteran's - thanks!

Hey Sean - oops, I see what your saying. Thanks -  thought I was measuring from the back, see there it's performance has already improved as if by magic ;D, It keeps that set always.

Man I can't wait to get another one finished so I can soak some more of this up - it's like high five's all around!  ;D  ;D
Thank's Lennie, David, Eddie, Venisonburger!!! Oldbow, ya know I wasn't even thinking about that just wanted to show my wares (well maybe a little ;D) maybe I'll call it the self kilt bow, ha ha. Jawge - man I've seen you make a lot of comments about a little more bend around the fades so I've been paying particular attention to that area (sometimes I hear voices - naw ;D) but if you like - I sure like it, will shoot for bout the same on the next no bendy handle.
Man Sparky - I'll be hooking up with ya. Git on back home.

Great job Cowboy, It's beautiful. Is that a Aloe plant behind you? Yep them Rode-Iller Reds (Rhode Island Red's) give x-large brown eggs....mix'em with cheese and some bacon....mmmmmmm......I couldn't go bare foot growing up because of them things...LOL's...but loved those eggs

Yessir Dick! will do - I'd love to get back with you and Vinson sometime. That's actually a Century plant in the garden, they look a lot like aloe, and agave, and yucca, and others - never have gotten an answer on where they get their name though. Yalper great big ole cholesterol filled brown eggs, he he. But I love em, got lots of Rhode Island reds but that's a sex link - they can be sexed when they hatch by their color  :-\.

Hey Paul, the Century Plant is an Agave. It gets it's name because it blooms after 100 years(MOL) then dies. Usually it puts out "pups" that you can transplant elsewhere.     Pat

Rhode island red crossed with a Dominique eh!  Don't have to feed them long to know what you have that way.  Justin

congratulations from germany too.  like andrews, i like hickory too and let me tell you, you made a fine bow out of it.  but then again, having seen your points, it was only a matter of time before you would nail one  ;D  would you mind posting a close-up of the back?  that paint job looks interesting.

Ahh! so it is an Agave - did not know that, I'd heard about it blooming after a hundred years but didn't know it died after, interesting. Yep, them ole pesky chickens - we've already culled all the roosters, so the only thing that may get skewered around here will prolly be the neighbors dogs that like to run em every once in awhile ;D.
Thanks Marius: Here's a pic of the back. The diamonds start out at four inches long at handle are four inches apart and get progresivlly smaller toward the tips. Layed them out, masked them, three coats of permanent marker, sealed the whole thing with three coats of Tru Oil. And braced.

WOW...Cowboy, those diamonds really look great up close. I've gotta try some of that Tru oil on my next one. Really did a jam-up job for yours. Tiller looks nice too.
Never had a problem telling the Roosters apart...Those Dominekker's can get mean...since they're smaller maybe it's like the small man syndrome.... ;D  they'll spur you in a heart beat. I remember cranking them like T-Models......will never forget the smell of cleaning them....geeesh
You've got me wanting to glue up my hickory billets.....just glued up a couple of ERC billets and still have to finish the black locust I'm working on.....fun fun fun.... :D

thanks for the pics cowboy.  the grain of the wood fooled me (is that cambium?).  i thought it was part of the design, because it plays with and around the diamonds so well.  beautiful bow.

That pic of the design pattern is great, Cowboy. I'm gonna add that as a "click - on"  on my TBD pages , since i specifically mentioned it.

thanks for adding my Hic to your site Bernie! Your gettin lots of bow's in there  :).
Marius: that does look like Cambium on the back, it's actually the depression's where the Cambium was - I scraped it all out. What your seeing is the stain in the depression's that I didn't wipe off, speaking of stain I'll never use it again - too much drying time.

Sorry Jimmy, thanks. My wife's right - I am losing my mind!! and while focusing on my reply forgot to acknowledge your compliment. That there Tru Oil is some amazing stuff and I would'nt have known about it without the help of all the guys here on this site - much less build a bow. I am tired though, have spent the last several hours hauling flint up the creek bank in buckets in 90 degree humidity - will be posted in the near future ;D
