I went fishing at a local lake today. The lake is fed by a small river so I decided to head to the mouth of the river as the water is finally high enough there to do that. First cast into the mouth of the river and the fight was on! I was using my ultra light rod with 4 lb test line and a small 1/16th ounce jig head with a shad colored bass assassin on it. This stripe ran out almost all my line, I was having to chase him with my trolling motor to keep him from running all my line out. I finally wore him out enough to get him to the boat and I had to reach in and lip him because I don't have a net yet... :) Here he is... the biggest stripe I have ever caught... AND I caught him on an ultra light rod with 4 lb line. It took like 20 minutes to wear him out enough to get him in the boat. Thanks for looking! :)

impressive. I've never fished for big mouth. they look like(on t.v. anyway) like a kick in the pants to try to wrangle. that is defenitely a story to last awhile. congrats.

That's a big fish! Nice job Josh.
I miss fishing, not much of it to be done here in the desert :(

Nice stripe!!!! Which lake were you fishing in Josh?
-
That is a dandy Josh! Think i may have caught one almost that size once - makes me want to go fishing.
-
Nice fish Josh and well done with the light gear. How much did he weigh?
I'm not really into fishing myself but my dad used to like fishing with ultra light gear, if I remember right he liked 2# test line. One time, I was about 8 years old, we went fishing at a lake we used to go to, it had Northern Pike and LM Bass in it. He hooked onto a 16# Pike and fought it for about 2 hours before it finally got tired, he did the same as you since he didn't have a net. He tipped his canoe trying to get the fish in it, I was on shore watching. He didn't lose the Pike

Nice stripper, Josh. I've cought a few but none that big. This time of year the big strippers head up river to spawn in the shallows.
-
I bet that was a boat load of fun, Josh ;D, really nice fish. You'll have to come down here and chase some of those LargeMouths we have.
-
Nice striper Josh, that is a big one. Must have been a blast on ultralight gear. We fish in the saltwater up here for them in the fall. I usually use light tackle, never tried going ultralight.
-
Great pic and story - way to go!

Thanks again, Guys! It was a really fun experience, I hope to catch a matching one next weekend so I can have one to go on the wall on each side of the mantle! ;D ;D
Marc, your dad sounds alot like me.. I would tip the canoe and never let go of the fish too... gotta keep your priorities straight and all.. ;D
Medic, I caught him on Inland Lake which resides just outside of Onteonta AL off of Hwy 75. They just re-opened the lake it has been closed to the public for awhile because the water was so low... It supplies a pretty big part of Birmingham with drinking water.
Scott and PatB... STRIPPERS?!
Johnston, I am doing great after surgery... I feel like I am back to 100% now... Just really don't like being on these blood thinners.
Paul, the best time to go catch em is right now in AL... along with the crappie and bass. I was crappie fishing when I caught this one.
-
Oneonta... I used to live in Ashville ,that isn't too far away. All I'm catching are small ones but, I am catching fish
-
My bro caught bout 150 1-1.5 lb yellow stripe yesterday, only kept 10 of those, and 11 crappie that went 1.5 to 2.5 lbs. He always does that stuff when I'm not with him. They were in Lake Guntersville.
-
oooh i wanna go to guntersville... supposed to have real good gar hunting this time of year.
-
those yellow stripe are good eating.... not as good as crappie but good eating nonetheless... :)
