A bullet :o A copper jacketed bullet to be exact. I didn't know it was there until I cut a little excess from the bottom of the stave. I turned it over there it was. I guess it is the cause of the split. It looks like it has been there a long time. This tree was growing close to a road, maybe someone shot it from their car.

Coooooool! If this one survives tillering it has a great 'shot' at Bow of the Month.
:P

I split a large hickory tree last year that had a slug in it. My ex girlfriends father who help me cut the wood thought it may have been hers from one of their first hunting trips. I ended up cutting it out still in the piece of wood and gave it to him.

Be kinda cool to take a deer with a bow made with a spent round in it from a guy who MISSED a deer with a firearm. If that convoluted sentance doesn't make any sense, let me know and I'll reconstruct it somehow. I think it just confused me.

Cool, thats called character !!

sweeeeeeet!! :o

No, it is too deep to keep it in. It would be cool if I could though. If this bow makes it, I'll name it "Bullet", or maybe "The whispering eye" ;D

Thats cool,I once found 3 nails in a stave, it made a fine bow.

Only thing I ever found in a tree was a BIG nail. Found it with my Dad's brand new chain saw. The first cut ha let me try with it. :D
I still have that piece of wood with the nail.

Not uncommon!
Years ago the sawmills in Germany had problems with WW2 bullets, granate and bombsplinters.

That make and alsome bow,if you can leave it in.
-
I won't be able to leave it in the limb, but I thought I could save it and drill a hole in the thick part of the handle and put it in there.

Make yourself a 'lead' strik plate. ;)

very cool man, you should definately incorporate it somehow. Its to bad it cant stay in the limb
-
Your not showing where it is in relation to the bending part of each Limb....there is a good possibility that You could leave it in there and Tiller it out with the Round right where it is...I would surely give it a go ...before I pulled it out....JMO

It is in the mid-limb, right where you should start tapering towards the tip. It is about 1 1/2" thick still and the bullet is mushroomed out inside the knot. As mush as I would like to leave it there, it just isn't possible. I'm just hoping to be able to make it into a bow. The growth rings aren't very good at all, so I am making it overbuilt and low stress. I was just working on chasing a ring on it. I feel like a surgeon working on somebody. Here is what I have done on it so far.

I bet it will be fine...here is a Picture a a nasty knot in one of mine....and it's 9 years old now! And the Rings were really thin and tight on this one...

That is the kind of holes I like in a bow. Sweet find right there.
