I just gotta know one thing.........what is an allergic hobbit?
AND...Now you're just showing off!
Seriously though, very impressive. Really makes me rethink each piece that goes to the debitage pile! I've rescued a lot of pieces since watching your videos. Thanks again!

Jamie, that's too funny! Seriously, glad you enjoyed that. I was really missing the copper that day but I managed to quit cold turkey. For a while anyway... ;D
Justin, don't ask me. That was the name I chose years ago when blogging was first becoming popular. I had a humor-based blog and I guess I thought the name was funny. Anyway, I used it for my youtube account because I couldn't think of anything else.

I realy like the vidieos. I was wondering how much presure you are putting on the point? thanks.

Another great series! Thank you so much for putting them up. I'm a very visual learner, so videos like these really help me a lot.
-
Maddog, I put a little more pressure on the point with antler than with stone, copper, or steel. Antler is a little "spongy" and requires a bit more pressure to release a flake. The pressure is about the same as the pressure needed to break the tip of a sharpened pencil. You've got to be VERY careful with the tip. It took a couple months for me to learn to sharpen the tips without snapping them off.
In one video, I show a fire-hardened antler pressure flaker. Fire hardening eliminates the "spongyness" but makes it weaker and more brittle. I don't like using fire-hardened antler very much. It's useful only for tips, IMO.
You're welcome Jonathan!

once again very good video I went into a transs then when it was over popped back out of it lol
Jamie you are funny ;D
Nice job crafty

Jonathan, I snapped hell out of a "tine" this weekend. Filed it down and snapped it again....guess some models do come brittle ::)
-
Pat, just finished watching a couple videos and really enjoyed them! Bookmarked for when I have more time to watch. Thanks for posting!

Thanks Tracy :)

another nice set of vids
ive been trying your technique for indirect percussion
cant figure out how and the heck you hold the tool in you knee like that
i just cant do it
-
Sit on something low and elevate your foot a little. I sit on a low bucket and put my foot on a large rock. It helps off you have heavy denim jeans on too. ;D
-
did a demo today at the museum and met a couple of kids who were learning to knap. i showed them your method and they took to it quick. very good. i may of gotten video of my punch technique too. if i did i'll post it .
-
Jamie- kudos for taking time for the kids!
Pat & Tim- as I was reading on the hows, I wondered if one of those ace elastic knee braces might help hold the tool in place a little better?

Jamie, that's awesome!! My kids took to it quick too. The thing they don't like, though, is when they hit their fingertips. You find out real quick who has the determination to learn and who doesn't. ;D
Tracy, that knee brace sounds like it will work. Give it a try and let us know. There are a lot of guys having trouble holding the punch behind the knee.
