Title: Future skins
Post by: NTD on March 13, 2011, 03:45:15 am
My pairs of tiger rattlesnakes have been breeding lately so I've been going into the herp room quite often to see what kind of developments I've had.  Started playing with the camera and snapping pics of some of the animals in my collection.  I think I got some good pics.

And some rattlesnake porn.  I'm really crossing my fingers for this breeding.  Only one zoological institution has produced these and a handful of private hobbyiest such as myself have done it.

Super Cool collection!  I am a Herp nut as well but I'm back on the wagon and only have 1 small Viper at the moment.  Wife wasn't overly thrilled with my idea of keeping some of the larger ones in our boy's Home School Room  ;D

Your specimens look exceedingly healthy which is always a joy to see in a Hobbyist's collection.  Is that a Retic with the "rainbow sheen" on his head?

Thanks Lee.  Yes that's a Retic.  But its a super dwarf retic.  I don't keep any giants.  Too much food ;)

I can see only one problem with your pictures...
YOU GOT SNAKES IN ALL OF THEM DUDE!! :o
Christ, I will not sleep well after those. We have got to come up with a warning on these threads.

Wake up and smell the coffee, Bevan.  If Nate posts something there will be either a snake or his kid in the pic.

Which reminds me, Nate, has your li'l cutie pie switched from pinkies up to hoppers yet?   >:D

Hey I thought I was the only one to do that. (Raise my own skins) I'm breeding Balls right now and raising up a couple of hypo tangerine hondurans. I gave up on the big snakes also for the same reason too much food. Cool collection

Those Hondurans will be some Crazy bow backings.  The future skin thing is kind of tongue in cheek.  I will never end these guys lives but years and years down the road when it's their time they'll grace the back of a bow.

Thanks guys!  I have 8 rattlesnakes.  4 tigers, 2 sidewinders, 1 Arizona Black, and 1 albino western diamondback.  I want to add a pair of White Speckleds and then I'll be happy.

Here's a white speckled

I would never kill them just for skins but that don't mean I'm gonna let them go to waste if they die. That white speckle is crazy looking!  Cute kid too.

That's my sentiments too.  My wife and I were discussing this the other day though.  Some snakes by the time they are old enough to go aren't the lookers they were in their younger days.  Jungle Carpets are one of those examples.  I have a female jungle carpet that is well over 20 years old and I'm expecting her to go at anytime...unfortunately she's not the knock out she used to be....but her 3 year old kids are screaming yellow and black..... >:D

I hear ya. Thats why I tell my breeding friends to save me any of the little ones that don't make it, they can be used for arrow wraps. Heres a couple of mine(http://i435.photobucket.com/albums/qq78/artlemos/P8270013.jpg)(http://i435.photobucket.com/albums/qq78/artlemos/P8270021.jpg)(http://i435.photobucket.com/albums/qq78/artlemos/185661_1898347937801_1214717734_2236592_7302274_n.jpg) the white and brown one is a pied ball, same type as the yellow. Ignore my friend trying to imatate a snake

I'm not a ball python guy, I prefer the aussie pythons for the most parts and I have the boas for my wife BUT....I just got a pair of het pied ball pythons from a friend who is a ball breeder....they are a means to an end though as soon as I get a high percentage pied from them I'm selling them >:D ;D

Nice pics and animals btw ;D

Nate:
The Boas and Pythons look like they are just happy to be there....
The rattlers always look like they are pissed off ;D

That white speckled....  Is that a species of rattler all by itself or is it a sub species???
Never seen anything like it.

David,

I can see what you mean about the rattlers...really the only pissed off one was sidewinder...I had to move something in her cage to get the pic.  They are usually quite content though.  They don't even rattle much at me anymore.

The white speckled is a Crotalus mitchelli there are 3 subspecies within the mitchelli species.  They only occur in Arizona and some parts of Nevada so that's probably why you haven't seen them.  Not all of them are as nice and white like that one but there are some even better than the one I posted.  I don't have a pair yet but I have some friends who breed them, I could go find my own pair on a road somewhere up north but with gas prices I might just wait for someone to get babies.  Although I'm sure if I find some roadkilled speckleds people here might like that ;D

They weren't sure about the genetic basis for piebaldism for awhile with the ball pythons but yep it is.  The het's even have a distinctive marker for it.

There are dwarf retics and there are super dwarf retic.  The dwarfs are in the 12ft range...the Super dwarfs are about 6-7Ft max.

Your dog looks like she has bubble gum on her face! ;D  Good looking dog.  Dang, I hope you are indeed careful with those critters. ;)  We had one in Lakeland, where Eddie lives, get loose and it killed a little girl who lived next door.  They are neat, and all, and I do believe from the pictures, you are not like some people who don't take the proper care of, and precautions with them.  I used to raise big scorpions, no not the African ones with huge pincers, just good ol South Florida black ones that reached about four to six inches long.  Nasty little critters, neat, but at the time my Buddy I was sharing the apt with, was afraid they would get out of the aquarium, so I got rid of them.  I was a Dental lab tech at the time, so another Friend of mine put some poison that I can't remember the name of now, on some plaster of Paris, and let it soak in, in a glass jar, and then I put the scorpion in and it went pretty quickly, and then, I cast it in silver.  Don't know, now what I ever did with it.  Had one I put in some acrylic.  Scorpions are like Lawyers, they serve a purpose, but you don't get attatched to them..... ::)  Can I get away with that? So you are like my place in Montana, we don't get a whole lot of snow, but an hour away, or up in the mountains, they do.  Give McKenzie a hug for me, and be safe out there in PD land, and keep your eyes peeled for the road kills, when it starts to thaw out, out there.  You have some beautiful patterns to choose from.   ;)  Do those cacti ever freeze?  Or do you ever get a real hard freeze come through?  We get an occasional hard freeze where I am going to live in Montana.  -8 this year.  About three hours from me there is a place  called Choteau, that gets lots of nasty weather, and they had 105 mph winds, come through, and then it dropped down to minus 20 something.  It is a very beautiful area, but I am glad that I don't have my house there!  Looks like you have plenty of room to practice your archery.  Even firearm shooting.  Take care, and keep the pictures coming.

I really liked that pic of the pup Wayne.  I think she though she was back in Idaho.

As far as your concerns about the rattlers, it's understood.  I do take good care of them as my purpose for keeping them is much more than some kind of "cool" factor.  As far as precautions Yep, I take plenty of them.  They are housed in a zoo grade enclosure.  My friend Frank used to have a business building zoological exhibits.  This particular cage is fiberglass housing with Lexan sliding doors with locks.  Being Lexan (not plexi) I could whack the dang doors with a hammer, tip the cage upside down and they wouldn't break.  I don't "handle" them, even with tongs or a hook if I can avoid it.  They are kept on a natural substrate which help keep the cage clean due to normal bio breakdowns, so I don't have to mess around in the cage much.  When I do anything in the cage it's with tongs, my hands never go in there with snakes in the cage.  They are located in a room that has 2 doors seperating it from the rest of the house and those doors has sweeps on them to prevent escapees.  I do everything I can to mitigate the risks of keeping these guys.  I was a bit more lacksdasical before Mackenzie was born, but I tightened things up after ;)

Scorpions are interesting.  My wife has a fascination with them.  In about a month I will start collecting them for sale.  I did bulk collecting last year of scorpions and made a few hundred dollars and I only went out and collected 2 nights.  I started a bit late in the year though, so I hope to do better this year.

The cactus do freeze someitmes, we had some record lows this year and a lot of people sustained substantial damage to their cactus gardens.  We had single digit lows...which for most of the country is nothing but for here it was bad...Lot of pipes freezing and breaking.  This is only my 3rd winter in AZ but I've been told it only snows about once every 4 years in Tucson ;)

I love it here, I do have lots of room, I'm only on an acre but I have a ton of public land adjacent to the property.

Yeah, I kinda thought you would be a bit on the cautious side. ;)  Wow, you must have a lot of scorpions out there, or they are quite pricey.  Two nights, and a couple hundred dollars.  :o I have always wondered about the Indians, pioneers, and cowboys, who slept out on the bare ground, and under wagons, and such, with all the scorpions, and trantula's and sidewinders, and such, how the heck could they sleep?  I would have to have a hot bed of coals around me in order to sleep.  I'd be up all night with a big stick, whacking creepy, crawling, and slitheing critters.  I'd have to sleep in the day time.  Not to mention the nasty little Gila Monster! :o  Now those things have a set nasty looking chompers, not to mention the venom! :o

We have lots of them if you go to the right places.  I sold them for $2-5 depending on species and how many they bought.

Those Gilas are actually pretty laid back guys.  They don't startle easy and they have a long fuse.  Takes a lot to piss them off.  Frank has a holding permit for 4 of them...get to play with them occasionally.  And I know I've posted this one before but this is the Gila's Big brother...Mexican Beaded Lizard...I do have to admit I was pretty vigilant while holding this guy.

Boy that is a big one!  No thanks, I'll just look at them in the cage.  My luck, someone would have been aggravating it, before I picked it up. :o  Soooo, I will just look thank you.  Those teeth, or fangs, are phenomenal.  If you ever got bit by one, you wouldn't be able to just pull your hand away!  Not like regular lizard teeth.   :o  They are like a pit bull once they clamp down on you.  The pain is supposed to be excruciating. :P Seen some pictures on Animal Planet, where in Mexico there were these little tourista stands, that sold all kinds of junk, and the skins, and skulls of Gila, and Beaded lizards.  It showed the fangs on those things, whew! :o  Nope, no camping out under the stars, in that neighborhood. ;D

Thanks Lee, I like the anery's but a nice hypo are probably one of my favorites for the boas.

No kidding Cam.  I'll post some new pics of her later.  She's a ton of a fun, quite a nice dog...but crazy!

Bevan,
Rats, Mice, and Quail.  I breed the rats and quail myself.  The rats make a little profit as I breed many more than I feed.  I've been trying to expand and actually make the rodent breeding my regular job.  Sounds funny but the mice I feed I get from a friend who is a commercial mouse breeder.  He makes 60-70K on breeding mice...works 3 days a week too ;)
