I'd personally scrape the right midlimb a bit. When the right limb matches the left limb, it's time for the short string.

Looks promising already! :)

Title: Re: trade bow started, tiller check

Looks pretty good to me, could be a little stiff just past mid limb on the right limb but could just be the lighting and back ground difference ;D ???
Title: Re: trade bow started, tiller check
Post by: John K on March 23, 2011, 08:00:40 pm
I think it looks a little stiff out of the fades, and the right limb looks like a flat spot 1/3 out. Coming along !

I'll either start a new bow or use one of the backups, probablly start a new one, I remember why I dont stain hickory very often. Bub

Rich I was trying a fancy stain job, one limb was darker than the other, add some dye same problem back and forth and after a while got flussterd and thought maybe the bow had bad juju, just had to step away for a bit, pretty happy with the finnish now, and nothing wrong with the bow, she shoots hard and pretty fast to, Bub

thank's to everyone, finally got her done, 64" ntn 50# @ 28" straight taper with mild r/d, I used the embossed leather and worked it up some to give it an old look to go with the finnish, coyote silencers that I tanned last year, think she turned out pretty good after all, thank's, Bub(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/handpad001-17.jpg)

bubby I got a question...what stain did you use on the last go round ? I hope to have some hickory to stain soon and I sure do like it.

Beautiful bow..btw I shoot lefty and if you ever get to where you want to "give it away" like you almost did this one..... ;D ::)

Post by: bubby on April 13, 2011, 07:24:07 am
thank's for all the kind words everyone, Lane the final stain was minwax oil based dark walnut, but the dark stain down in the grain was from the first stain and that was dark brown rit dye with some rubbing alcohol, Bub

Thanks bubby...nothing could make my work look as good as yours but hey, gotta start somewhere.

I just tried staining a scrap piece with very dark stain and then wiping it off with mineral oil.
I think :( it outlined the grain but wont know til I try my stain brew I got outa archives.

Anyway thanks for the help.

Like all your bows you've posted, it looks great. I like the way the first stain really shows off the lines in the hickory. Just shows that sometimes things turn out great in the end even if you can't seem to see it while working on it (referring to the original stain job). Somebody is sure to be VERY pleased with this beauty!!

Naw JW that ones coming to Southern Kansas.

Bubby, I love the way you were worrying and complaing about the stain earlier, I do stuff like that myself. everybody else says " ooh it looks great" and I'm always seeking perfection ( as if I can really ever acheive it). The finish. tiller, handle treatment, tips and everything look great. Somebodies gonna be a happy camper.   Danny

Bub,

You didn't disappoint my friend!!!  It is a lovely bow.  ;D  Hey JW, it came to my house, can you believe it?? ;D ;D  My wife didn't tell me a package had come until I nearly tripped over it tonight. ::)

I didn't get a chance to shoot it, but I'm headed to the hog lease tomorrow morning and it's going with me.  Wahoo!!!   I may even let Cipriano shoot it.   I'll take some pictures of it out there and post them Sunday night.  Thanks again for the bow, it is beautiful.  That handle wrap is stunning.  BTW, I think some yellow wood is in your future, but it may be a little challenging. ;)

Finally got Bubby's bow out and shot it.  It took me 4 arrow to get over the allowance I had to make for the too stiff shafts I shot out of my osage takedown on the last hunt.  I think my nock point is still a bit off as I kept shooting too low.  Notice the coyote fur string silencers.  I had the brace height too low so it wasn't as quiet as it will be.

The handle is exquisite.

John & Hatch, it's the least I could do.  Really, I wanted to show off Bub's good work.  Now, I need to get a hog with it.  So many bows, so little time. It's a labor of love. ;)

There are lots of choices for challenging yellow wood Bub, easy and straight are pretty rare here.  I'll PM you later.  Thanks again.
