Title: Let's see your bow racks!
Post by: Matt S. on February 28, 2011, 11:34:42 am
I finally managed to take some photos of my new bow rack and thought I'd share. I also thought it would be fun to see how other people on PA store their bows.

Here's my rack waiting to be stained and finished:

The outer rack is designed to hold the bows while the inner rack is designed to hold some arrows.

Here's the rack finished and with all the hardware installed:

The door handles and hooks are all hand forged and powder coated:

I'd be glad to go into greater detail if anyone wants to know more.

That looks really nice I really like the hooks underneath to hang the quivers on.  All of my bows are laid across the guest bedroom upstairs in my house, LOL.  I need to build me one of those.  Nice work!  :)

Yes, sir. That is nice. Doh!  >:( and just what I needed... another piece of work to inspire me to build another darned thing. Seriously, great work on that rack.

Looks cool, I like the idea of the small storage space underneath.

I haven't built enough bows to justify needing a rack yet, but soon... very soon... gotta stop giving them away :)

Yes, I love the storage cabinets underneath because that's where I keep my bracers, tabs, gloves, grain weight, strings, and all the extra stuff that would clutter the house if it didn't have its own home.

As for number of bows, this rack can store 14 bows assuming 1 bow per shelf. Most of the bows I am making now are not for me and as the weather gets nicer I'll be diverting more time to home improvement projects and less time to bows, so it may take a while to fill it up.

I know what you mean! This was my attempt at a "preemptive strike" to keep the peace before my better half got too annoyed with my clutter. I think it worked because she said she really like the way it looks.

Thanks for the compliments, but this really wasn't too complicated or expensive. It's made from 1x4 el cheapo pine from HD and Lowes. No fancy joinery, just (mostly) hidden screws and butt joints ;D The hardest part was cutting and sanding the rack pieces.

Powdercoated the hardware?  Heck, EVERYTHING in my house is powdercoated, but up here we call it dust.

By the way, nice rack, man!

trappeDave, that is a nice rack. I saw one very similar to that and it was my inspiration to build a bow rack.

We have plenty of that too ;D ;D

I made my rack out of a 1 by 3 piece of oak with dowels. Not to pretty but who's looking at the rack anyway? I can hang a bunch of bows in a small area with no fuss.

I have found that fishing rod holders make great bow holders, I pick them up at yard sales.

Good idea,... I like the fact that you have many bows in a small area.
I just got an idea,..a sort of take off of this one with deer antlers and an antique piece of furniture!

Wow, those are some nice bows gmc, Bevan and juniper junkie! I like those bow racks too. Hopefully I'll have to make a second some day and I just may do one in that style.

juniper, that's a LOT of bows! But it isn't an addiction until EVERY wall is covered with bows or arrows ;D ;D

Matt, I've seen Dave's house, trust me, every wall is covered and he is an addict.  If you go wood collecting or rock gathering with him you will really see the extent of the hold it has on him. His eyes dialate and he starts sweeting shaking and then his finger nails and hair grows out and he looks very "caveman" like.  Once I was in a very large syringa patch with him and saw him rolling in it like a dog that just found a carcass. >:D >:D
He often take other when he's on a binge just to help justify but that is often after he has "high graded" the area.

I would go insane just trying to decide which bow I wanted to take, or should take, which one had the luck that day, which one would be a little sluggish, which one deserved to hunt that day, which one I had forsaken for a while......HELP, please keep me from this addiction

I also hang all mine from pegs, by the string..........

Pat, no, I dont have any grumleys, but I wish I did. the bows on top are static recurve kokiaks with the brush nocks, they are from the mid 40's. I have one compass kodiak, and one 59 kodiak. still looking for a grumley. Oh Keenan, you are just in denial :D you have to come to terms with your addiction...just because you occasionally black out as a result of becoming over excited, doesnt mean you dont have a problem. ::) Geez...talk about the pot calling the kettle black... ;D

Yeah,  If it is not too much trouble the specs on your measurements would be a jump start to replicating what you did.  NICE work by the way.  really inspiring.

I'll see if I can find my chicken scratch plans. If not I'll have to take some measurements. Either way, it may take me a day or two but I'll post back here when I have some dimensions.
