Shannon Walker gave me a persimmon stave at the classic last year, I had told him to get me a good one, and boy did he come through! :o This is the first persimmon I have ever worked, as the good trees here at home are few and far between.
This wood really surprised me. Once I got it dry it had more spring in it than most woods I have handled. The wood is actually kinda bland in color so I decided to try something a little different on the back.
I had a copperhead skin that was holey and torn in several places; I ripped it down its center, and then just kinda cut all the bad off leaving the main pattern. Glue it down, very carefully, and then finished it with ploy. Not real sure how much I like it, but it is a way to use up bad skins and gives the bow some character.
65” ntn-54# @ 27”. (Kinda heavy for the lil feller but he can grow into it). :-\The tip overlays are from lace wood. I induced 3” of reflex and it retains 2” after rest. This is also the first time for me to build a grip with a shelf. May have to do a few more of them.
I guess I’m done with it, so he can have it back. O:)

A few more pics.

That's a gorgeous bow, and great tiller!
-
That's one fine lookin hunk of persimmon there Tim! If Shannon don't want it back you can just mail to me :).
-
Beautiful bow Tim. I love everything about it but especially the way you did the skins. Opens a lot of possibilities. 8) I have a real nice persimmon stave that Steve Parker gave me a few years ago so it is nice and dry. ;D
-
Not for the BOM? That would have been a very fine contender: perfect tiller, elegant finish and great looking handle.
-
That's a great looking bow Tim!! Fine work. I like the backing also.
-
Everything on that puppy is top notch. really like the handle and tips. The skins look cool too. lets the wood show along side the copperhead.
-
WOW :o I love seeing your work Tim. You never fail to impress.
-
That is just plain purty! ;D Very nice bow and great tiller ;)
-
Thanks guys. :-[

Outstanding as always, great idea with the skins.
-
Man, that's nice, Tim. I remember Shannon giving you that stave. You sure made a pretty bow out of it.
-
I agree with the above. Good looking skins but especially like the colors of the woods used.

I feel so inspired when I'm on this site and see all the creative ideas and talent flowing...
I've been trying to work up a unique backing on an ERC bow and when I think I've stumbled on something that will meet that criteria I open a new thread and see it's been done, old hat, etc. Killer bow, how dense in the persimmon?
-
Wow! That is a beautiful bow.
-
Very nice looking bow with wonderful tiller. Nice work ! ' Frank
-
Beautifull bow. I like that handle wrap style too.
Darcy :)
-
Perfect tiller. This is the kind of thread that the new guys need to see. This is how its done.
-
Now thats a beauty Tim,very well tillered and the finish work is exceptional. :)Got some more drying for you. ;) :) :)

You can't be serious?!!??!?
It looks INCREDIBLE!!! As much as I do like to see snake skins on a bow-back, there are times when I think it covers up the wood just a bit too much. You've shown incredible craftsmanship in being able to take the slimmest sliver of snakeskin (try saying that five times fast after half a bottle of Jack ;) ) and working it into the project in such a subtle, yet striking way! The long tip overlays really add to it too, making the whole bow look really sleak and beautiful!
Great bow and good save of a tatty skin!
Steve.

That's a beauty for sure Tim...! The skins look really cool and accents the bow and wood real well. Nice job as always.
Paul
PS- Uh, what's that funny lookin' green stuff on the ground where the snow is supposed to be...? ;)
-
Very beautiful bow, Tim! Why no BOM? Tiller looks perfect on it and I really like the way you did the skins! :)
-
I would vote for it. I'm not sure I can say more than what has already been said. Just beautiful! Excellent work!
-
Beautiful bow, Timo!
-
Wow!!!! excellent job on that. Looks sleek! It came out a real nice weight and holding 2" reflex what more could a guy ask for.
Shannon is gonna be thrilled. Very nice of you. Shannon is a good guy. At the classic I had a few staves picked out of his pile and he said I needed to learn how to bargain better because I said " sounds good" to the low price he gave me right away. So he Talked himself down lower and lower until I couldn't take it anymore ;D Glad to see this great bow being made for him. :)
-
Tim that bow is absolutely beautiful and the tiller is excellent. :) Jawge

Another beauty Timo. I like your idea for the strip of snake skin, very unique. I think I'd like to put a locater grip on my next bow, thanks for the inspiration ;D Where do you find the leather grip wrap?
-
Thanks again all for the back slaps and handshakes, makes one strive the much more.
Wasn't sure how these skins would turn out. The toughest part is gluing them down,as one has to take special care with glue. i used a watered down glue mix and a small brush ,and applied glue only on the skins, just a short length at a time. I then worked down the limb slowly as I didn't want to have the worry of removing access glue later. Babysitting them as they cured. Had to re-glue a couple areas. Pretty easy really.
Very beautiful bow, Tim! Why no BOM? Tiller looks perfect on it and I really like the way you did the skins!
Josh, I wasn't sure if it was kosher to have more than one bow in for BOM? I already have that osage character bow in. Doesn't really matter to me one way or another,if you want to. I just didn't want to seem like a " bow post hog" :-\
Jesse, sometimes you run into people that help you to put faith back into our society. Shannon is such a one.
Steve Milbocker, that handle wrap is just regular leather, nuthin fancy. I did a how to last year about it.
-
I would love to run it in the BOM contest. I think it would be a great contender. We have had 3 or 4 bows from the same guy in one contest before and the only disadvantage I have seen is it kinda divides up your votes between the bows. I think your knotty osage bow and this persimmion bow should be in the contest. Both are beautiful bows. :)
-
That is a well built bow!
-
Love your bows Tim! Shows some quality craftsmanship. I've had good luck with that ol' pucker wood also. Makes fine arrow footing material too! Just an all around nice wood to work with......Art
