I would also love to see the build-a-long on this. Was that a 'normal' size spike or one of the smaller ones?

That's genius.  Where can a guy find those spikes, aside from pulling them from a track?  >:D

I would definitely be interested in seeing how you made it as well.  Man, I need to get into knife making...

very cool knife  8)

i find spikes all the time, just walk along the tracks and keep your eyes on the ground
as kids we used to walk the tracks looking for ball bearings that had fallen out
we would use them as "steelies" for playing marbles  ;)

My brother is a welder and he always talks about building a forge.  I think I need to send him a link to this page, to plant a little seed in his brain and get him motivated :)  I can built him bows and he can make knife blanks for me, and other cool stuff like this.

There not hard to make I can make one in a hour if rushed but I like to take a few to make them look pretty. the basic tools are a forge either gas or coal you can also use a oxy/ac with a Rose bud tip but that will take alot of fuel. A good 2 # hammer and a anvil . And if you want to get all fancy like use a belt sander for the final shaping and then a knife sander to set the edge

I have been hammering these out at work for Years....don't use a Forge...got all the free Acetylene and Oxygen I need...along with Vises and Anvils....they are fun to make...and will hold a great edge after being tempered back after forging...just banged this out for a Friend this week
