Title: Just read the combed fiber question below and it made me wonder.

Would it be possible to use yucca fibers for backing? It seems like a similar type of fiber and also seems fairly strong. Just thought I'd throw that out there as I have not seen this done yet.

I don't see why not. Any strong plant fiber will work.
