Post by: fishfinder401 on January 30, 2011, 04:38:07 pm
is it worth trying to make abow out of black cherry, and if it is, is it more of a compression wood or tension, i know i could at ;east make a decorative bow out of it, its wood is so dark

Yes.  Compression wood.  Back it with something.  I have about a trillion of them invading my fields.  Unfortunatly, most of them aren't bow worthy.  Kinda snarly and obnoxious looking.  And the sprouts/saplings stab the tractor tires full of holes when you go to bushhog a field.

Black cherry makes a smooth shooting bow, but it would be a good idea to back it with hickory, white oak or some other such material.

I've only made one bow from black cherry.I backed it with rawhide. I kept it wide and long. It  was a great shooter,I gave it to a friend several years ago.As far as I know it's still in use
