Here's another shorty. It's red oak sapwood from a small thin ringed tree(just like what would have been available to the Apaches, Navajos, etc.). Anyway, it measures 43" between the 7/16" sinew-shoulder/pin nocks. At the handle, it is about 1 3/16" wide. Draw weight is around 58# @ 21". I used a combo of red Rit dye and medium brown Fiebing's leather dye to give it an oldish look.

Very cool bow,nice job.

That is pretty impressive. It is amazing how much abuse the wood will take with a sinew back on it. Justin

Thanks. The sinew on this bow was actually stripped off another that was a total dud(my first attempt at sinew backing). I used the method that I described in my post about my broken Maidu bow.

Wow, I can't believe how much those limbs are bending :o. Amazing!
-
Nice job!!!!
You are becomming quite the hand, with authentic reproductions.
Real cool.

thatat is really nice! love that "B profile".
-
Whow!
You are building so amazing shorties :)
-
Thats a great looking indian shorty, I like the shorties too, this one inspires me to try something similar. I noticed that you didn't round the edges, is that the southwest style? just curious, I always round the edges but yours looks nice the way you have them.

Jcoug it looks like the same thickness FROM HANDLE TO TIPS,is it a pyramid design? Did you start with 6-8" of reflex before the sinew? Cool looking bow-great work.
-
Now come clean...what museum did you swipe it from! ;D
Great looking authentic bow!

You got all the goodie out of that piece of oak. ;) Very nice bow. Pat

Very nice. I tried to bend oak like that once. When I was done I used the splinters to build a fire. Amazing.

Thanks to everyone! It started out with about 6" of setback, most of which is gone now. It's about half as thick at the tips as it is at the handle.
-
Got your nice bow bookmarked for May Self Bow of the Month!!
-
You are cranking out them sinewed short bows lately! Nice job! Can you shoot well with a 21" draw?
-
It takes a lot of getting used to. Definitely not something you would want to spend all day on a 3D course with.
-
Beautiful. Those western indians sure were stingy with wood. ;D

Thanks!

Nice reflex you got on the limbs and nice tiller. Very intriguing. I also have made a bow out of red oak with tight growth rings and it has a nice cast at 66" ntn and 37# @ 28".
