Title: 3-D with Primitive Bows
Post by: NTProf on January 22, 2011, 02:18:03 pm
I used to compete in 3-D shoots all the time with my compound equipment. Now that I build and shoot exclusively my own bows (self and backed) I was thinking of starting up again. Does anyone else shoot or compete in 3-D shoots with you primitive equipment? If so, what setup do you use?

I used to compete in the ASA open class With compound. Got burnt out about 6 years ago and didn't pick up a bow till last year when I started making my own. I think it is alot more satisfying and fun doing it this way. To me, there is nothing better (almost) ;) than watching an arrow that I make shootting from a bow that I make. No more 12 rings, just hit the vitals and relax ;D

i shoot around 10 3d a year. i shoot what i intend to hunt with  but shoot a lighter arrow most of the time. dont be intimidated by others or more modern equipment, just have fun and shoot what you like. you will be surprised at how many self bows you see out there any more.

I went to 2 of them last summer.  They were both traditional only shoots.  I had a blast.

Yep,the wife and I shoot 3-D with primitive bows. We go to two 2 day traditional only shoots every year. We both shoot primitive longbows and wood or  cane arrows. In shoot a 55 # BBI R/D and hers is a 40# BBO R/D. Try it you'll have a blast.

Traditional Bowhunters of Florida has 3 shoots a year. Three classes, longbow, recurve and primitive. The first two classes are glass.

I shoot 2 or 3 a year and use the same set up as when hunting. I buy a score card to support the shoot but don't keep score either and use it for hunting practice.

Heck, first time I met Pat was at a 3-D shoot in Ga. I was shooting an osage that wasn't finished and Pat had a hickory bow that turned to a noodle when the temperature and humidity went through the roof.

I usually do a couple a year... one longbows only, with 2-blade broadheads, called North American Longbow Safari. It's a blast.

Just got back from an indoor one in Cheyenne today. I shot with a bunch (I think we had 9 in our group) all shooting recureve & longbow. About 50+ other people with compounds. I was the only one shooting 'primitive' equipment. But you know what, I had fun shooting and being with people I like. Will be doing about one a month till fall.

Yep sure do,  best place to convert a few wheelie boys.  It really turns some heads when you walk through the coarse with a snaky character bow.  ;D

Yup, I shoot primitive (or longbow) at 3D shoots.
I generally shoot my Hazel bow 40# @28" (although I think it's lost a few pounds now).We have a good selection at our club, including a Roman Centurian who is difficult to hit as he has a great big shield which doesn't score.
My fave is the big rubber crocodile (only known as Doris for some inexplicable reason), my best shot was on my first 3D shoot, I got Doris first arrow kill at 30 yards over water.
Of course in the UK it's illegal to shoot real critters (even vermin) with a bow.
Video of my son shootingthe Hazel bow on my website. (and the rubber croc'  ;D)

That's too bad Del. I know hunting in the UK is pretty limited but it's sad that with such a rich history with archery you cant even hunt rabbits with a bow there.

yep, our club has a regular open 3-D shoot once a month april to september and a traditional only shoot in May. I help set up and tear down the targets and I get to shoot for free, so I shoot at every one. I don't even own anything but wooden bows anymore.

The ASTB has four shoots per year, the classes are longbow, recurve and primitive.  Sterling and Krista Holbrock are usually in the top some where, usually 1st.  And Sterling usues shoot or rivercane arrows with self nocks.  Bill

I shoot several in my area. There are many archery clubs and there is a shoot every weekend. I also attend Dentin Hill and shoot 3D's all weekend long. I have never competed with my primitive equipment but have with recurves and longbows. I have smoked some compound shooters at 3D's and novelity shoots....thats a great feeling but my primary reason is for hunting practise.

Howdy,  3D shoots are my main archery event.  The local club has 10 3dD shoots each year, plus a summer 3D league with a shoot every Tuesday eve.  I'm lucky in that my local club is ~ 80% trad and even those that don't compete in the primitive category, usually have a wooden bow in the closet.  Several other traditional shoots ( in CA) have a strong primitive showing.  So I shoot 30-36 3D's each year.

I do several a year, most Trad. only. There are several of them around if you don't mind traveling a little. We also have one in the spring,it draws a bunch of selfbow folks. more than 75 last year. I use the same equipement as when I am hunting, less the broad head. :) :)
