Title: War clubs
Post by: osage outlaw on January 20, 2011, 03:00:07 pm
Has anyone made or have pictures of some war clubs.  I was watching Last of the Mohicans the other day and the older guy was using a club that was shaped like a gun stock with a spike coming off of it.  I thought it would be fun to try and make something like that.

Osage,
Here's a couple different "gunstock" type clubs. The first is from Maine, the second is Miami (think thats about where Ohio and Illinois is now). The majority of Iriqouian and Algonquian clubs were of the "ball" headed type.
     Hope this helps ya some.

A friend is forging a blade for me right now to craft a replica as close as possible to that warclub Russel Means carried through LOTM. Found some measurements of it on the WWW.

wow-that snakehead one is amazing. Thanks for sharing those!  I always wondered about the physics  / efficiencyof the really large bent gunstock in LOTM - great scenes, though.

cold steel is making a replica of both the ball and gunstock war clubs.  they are suppose to be indestructible.  i was thinking about getting a set just to play with.  the gunstock club is a very efficient design for transferring energy, but it was originally invented to fool other hostile indians into believing the warrior carrying it really had a rifle.  the spike was suppose to shine to look like a frizzen on a flintlock.  at least this is what i've read about concerning the history of the gunstock war club.

How is the ball attached or is it one piece? I have been wanting to make one and I have a root end picked out just haven't figured the heavy bit out.

That's pretty wild, I would think a few good head whacks and the ball would pop out on one like the bird head one.

Those are all one piece.
