For those of you that knap abo style, what do you use to notch? I've been using antler, but it wears really fast and I have to constantly file it back down thin. I've just started experimenting with a sea shell, but I haven't used it near enough to form an opinion yet.

just a piece of deer antler, after every point i re-sharpen it and thatt he only think i use that antler tine for, i use another one al together for fine flaking andsharpening and sharpen it after every point as well...its a pain, but thats abo knappin

I use a piece of deer leg bone. Also have to reshape all the time
-
I have used a piece of cow leg bone and I have to reshape pretty often, I got a copper nugget and hammered it into shape, is that cheating? Bill

shannon told me about using a deers ulna bone and its awesome. much tougher than antler or leg bone. i also have thin brow tines i use for punch notching when i get into the thicker midsection of the point.
-
I've heard about using the ulnas. I was hoping I'd get a chance to try it out this year, but it looks like I'll have to wait a while longer.
-
I use a stone flake... turned on end and perpendicular to the arrowhead. When that doesn't work, I use my "cheater" pick. It's a sharpened ice pick made of steel. ;D
I tried bone and antler but you can't get narrow notches with either of these. Stone works well for notching and serrations. I use a hard stone like agate.
-
I do have some ryolite flakes laying around (and hoping to go get some more tomorrow). It don't get much harder than that stuff. I'll have to try that too.
-
I have punch notched with a wood paddle and a coon pecker.
-
O that must hurt, :o :'(O ya you take it off the coon first ;) ;D Sorry jesse,I had to go there. :)
