Title: bring back the bow
Post by: Jesse on January 10, 2011, 10:02:12 pm
I ran across this and thought I would share. Not sure when this is from. This is something that would be good in my area.  It really is a lost skill.  Many embrace their heritage on so many other levels but not the basic tool traditionally used for hunting.

South Dakota Public Television did that excerpt a while ago.  This program has been thriving for a while now and just keeps growing.  At the end of the video the guy knapping the stone and talking is my friend, Mike Stocklin.  He did most of the archery stuff for Dances With Wolves, back in the day.  He is one of the most talented bowyers and arrowmakers I have ever had the pleasure to work with.  Get a look at his hands, they are HUGE!  I've seen him knap out a matched pair of arrowheads that were only a quarter inch long and turn them into earrings, astounding dexterity!  He got started working with rattan quite a while ago and I noticed quite a few of the "staves" were rattan in this video.
