You see a lot of people hunting deer with primitive equipment, but is there anyone who hunts other big game with primitive bows - Elk, Moose, Bear, Caribou, dare I say Bison?
-
Yes ,yes, yes, and yes ,and dare I say yes !!!
I know personally of some of the finest hunters in this country doing these things for many years.
Many of the fine men I know don't do computers so you just don't get to see their work !!

A friend of mine took a bison cow with a 50# osage self bow I built him. Kind of a canned hunt but it was interesting to hear how it went. Cow was 600# shot at about 10 yards penetrated both lungs using a modern broadhead. Says she went about 50 yards and her lungs filled up with blood. Steve

I hear that question a lot when I show up in 1770's clothing and a flintlock rifle at deer camp. My usual answer is "Nope, not possible at all. That's why all our ancestors are dead...starved to death waiting for the laser guided, heat seeking, wireless internet GPS adapted ultra-mag rifles to be invented."
>:D
If you can hunt it with modern gear you can hunt it with the primitive gear if you adapt, work a little harder/smarter, and know the limitations of the equipment. You won't see many of the successful primitive equipment hunts in the average Hook-n-Bullet crowd magazines because they are not sponsored by big name manufacturers. Likewise you won't see it on the Horn Porn channels on cable either....again, those shows are nothing but an extended marketing tool (read: infommercial) for the advertisers. But if you subscribe to specialty magazines like Primitive Archer for bows, Muzzleloader/On The Trail/MuzzleBlasts for the blackpowder scene you will from time to time see some great articles on us nutjobs that insist on doing it the hard way!

JW, well-said!

Indains did'nt eat just plants for 10,000 years.

Wild life experts dont recommend hunting anything larger then deer with bow and arrow, and judging by all the skeletons I find in the woods of nice bucks with full racks, I might be inclined to agree with them. Personally, its my dream to go to africa and take BIG game with a bow. I think as long as you are shooting a good stout bow, 60+ pound draw, and a 400+ grain arrow, and, and, and, you are a good shot and a responsible hunter, its definitely do-able to take even the largest animals on land.
-
bucks boy i agree but ill tell ya now if ya wanna do that forget them 400 gr arrow s learn to shoot 800 -1200 gr arrows and 200 gr boradheads big for big animals no way id shoot 400 gr arrows on anything smaller than a deer brock
-
sounds like good advice to me brock. What is it like to shoot a big arrow like that? How does it perform?

Bucksbouy, when I hit the lottery I'll send you the tickets. I already have the guideservice that is pumped about primitive archery hunting on his leases. My plan is to go over with just the arrows made up ahead of time and my bow making tools. I'd like to spend time in a local village making the bow, shooting it in, then hunting with the locals with it! Mmmmm, gemsbock backstraps over a bushfire, I can almost taste 'em.
BTW, his latest lease has close to 1200 adult gemsbock on it, he reserves it for archery only because there are dozens of set ups where shots average under 20 yds. I bet I could hit a 400 lb antelope at that range! Ok, if I were to pop a Valium or two first to take the edge off the shakes.
-
JW, Ill start playing the lottery too. That way we can double our chances!

If I can learn how to do pictures on here I will post some from friends for you!
I don't get to do much hunting myself .
They all use normal equipment , 45-60 Lb Osage flatbows and 125-140 grain flint tips on their arrows arrows .
By the way have you noticed how much archery is mentioned in the old testament its full of some good historical info!
-
Buckeye, thanks. Would love to see any pictures. And yes, archery is a common phenomenon in the OT, in both narrative and poetic texts.
-
bucks boy they preform butiful i shoot insective ya there is a lot more of a rainbow cuz of the weight but practice everyday i normaly shoot 50 or more shot s a day every day i teach my brain to put the arrow where i want it most of the shot s iv made are compleat pass thrus the buffalo was a compleat pass thru as well as all the black bears and moose caribou elk iv put maybe 90 % pass thrus on elk moose bears none of my animals have went over 60- 75 yards
