Title: Australian Pine Bows
Post by: Parnell on January 04, 2011, 09:43:21 pm
I've been meaning to post pictures of things I've been working on for awhile now.  Here are two bows I'm keeping plane jane.  They've been "experimental bows" with the Casuarina - Australian Pine wood I've been fiddling with.  One stiff handled that I'd posted nearly a year ago, but have touched up.  Another very simple D bow that had a bend in the sapling I made it from.  The sapling bow is very interesting, I think, because it went from being cut to as is in about 2 weeks without heat treatment.  This is a thin bow, less than an inch wide with simple pin nocks.  64" long drawing just under 45#.  I love to shoot this bow.  Note the picture where you can see the back of the two bows.  The stiff handled bow wood was harvested after some cold weather last year.  The D bow just a couple months ago while still warm.  The lacing of the wood completely let go of the bark layer after cold weather.  It took more work to remove the bark after the summer growing season, but wasn't difficult.  I sanded the D bow, but left the stiff handled bow untouched.  Also, the stiff handled bow is about the same length pulling 50#'s and is very accurate.
