Hey guys, any of you have any experience with burlap backing? I have used it once on a hickory bow that did not really need the help so I don't know how well it would hold the back of a bow together. I'm currently making a red oak self bow and my instinct is telling me to back it with something. I have a bunch of burlap laying around and would like to use it. Does it work well as a backing? ???

I use the lighter weight burlap ground blind material. I like it. I've read where it might slow a bow down a bit, but i don't care about that. I've never had one break with it on there, so couldn't help you there. I had a friend that kept hearing a light cracking noise on his heavy weight, burlapped backed red oak. He put the bow in the pully type tillering tree, and pulled until it broke, and the burlap just allowed the limb to just break over, but stayed together by the burlap. He said he had another that broke, and the burlap ripped in half, letting the limb fly off. Good luck.
