Title: My Hickory Flatbow
Post by: carpenter374 on November 14, 2010, 06:11:08 pm
here's one i've been shooting for about 6 months. it's hickory, 68 in ntn, handle is wrapped leather bootlace. 1 3/4 in at widest tapering in the last 10 in or so to about 7/16" at the nocks. it took an inch of set during tillering, but it is a true sweet shooter. String i made flemish style from b-50. string silencers are beaver fur.Arrow resting on it i made from a ramin wood dowell with turkey wing fletch and flint point.   i built this bow for simple durability and reliability and it has not let me down. it has seen me through countless hours of practice, several 3d competitions, and a small doe this season for the freezer.

You got the elliptical tiller figured out, and with that heavy a pull only an inch of set ain't too bad.  Congrats on the meat stocked in the freezer!

I like a classical looking hickory flat bow like yours. Very nice, I wish they would work here.

Nice looking bow. I have a couple of hickory staves, I've been wondering what type of bow I should make. Hmm.... Thanks for the post.  '  Frank

One more question: Does your handle have a shelf cut into it, or do you shoot off your hand?

i just shoot off my hand. never had any probs doin that as long as arrows are spined right. the bow has a leather piece glued on the side to keep the arrows from wearing the finish off the bow. also makes it shoot quieter that way.

ok, here's a few close-up's. bow tip, and two shots of the handle. finish is a dark oak stain and several coats of spar urethane.
