Title: Rock type?
Post by: Michael C. on November 09, 2010, 02:39:15 pm
Anyone have ideas on what this is? I bought it from a guy in Comanche Texas, so my first thought was Pedernales but I don't know rock and he didn't specify type.

This looks like stuff we have here in Missouri, except the stuff here is all fractured.

Michael: That looks exactly like a bunch of lower grade Georgetown I got into out west of Austin. Big peices all fractured up but still good working stuff.

Thanks, it was cheap (10 bucks for 24lbs) and I need stuff to learn on so looks like I found what I need.

Looks like "Root Beer" Ped.  Not the high grade stuff, but not concrete either.  It is good stuff, it is what I prefer to make my hunting points out of. At about 60 cents a pound, you got a great deal.  Bill

I have to agree with Bill. I thought it was Texas Tab or Edwards Plateu root beer.

Yeah I thought at first it was some sort of Pedernales just because I saw some photos of points that had a bit of the same color, there is definitely some brown color to some of the pieces. It could be a mix for all I know because it has some that are Grey with light Grey rings in it, some that are Grey that blends into a pink color, some bright white and then some brown. Heck I don't know, I guess I will go to work on it and if it's to hard I will get my buddy to cook it up for me in his kiln.

The sellers handle was roughneck44, I bought some Pedernales from someone with the handle of walleringbear or something. That stuff WB sent was 3 times as much but it was cooked and sounds/looks like it's ready to make some points all by itself.
