Title: Tiller critique
Post by: NTD on October 12, 2010, 12:41:19 am
Hey guys I'm about to call this one done because I don't want to lose anymore weight and it's shooitng beautifully.  But before I do I figured I'd let a fresh set of eyes tweak it.
I'm thinking top limb right near the fade could use some scrapes....

I'd leave it where she is to be honest with you.  Theres always room for improvement, but theres also a point where extra work wont do anything.  Right now its looking like shes tillered perfectly and if shes shooting great I wouldnt tinker with it.  And thats a good looking bow, congrats on a great success.

i think i'd take a bit more from the upper limb about mid limb if it were me- just to round out that slight flat spot. it doesn't look bad now, but i'd like it more if the top limb was as pretty as the bottom. as far the upper fade goes, i'd wait until i had a pile of arrows through it before i did anything to it.

Here are a 3 spots that I would work on some more, cause in the picture it looks like the tip of the lower limb bends back more than the tip of the upper limb.

You have tiller fatigue and are suffering from overthink...
Step away from the bow put your hands in the air...
Drop the scaper, we have you surrounded.
Go and lie down somewhere cool and dark.
It's fine, no, it's better than fine, and if you don't want to lose any more weight just leave it be.
Shoot it in plenty and pray it doesn't shift on you like my last one did (whaaaa booo hoooo :'( )

I'm with Del, you always see things that could be a little better then you realize you are dealing
with a wood bow,not glass. Looks good to me,I would shoot it and see what happens, never know ,may just come right in. :)

I think you have done a fine job Nate. Yes the upper tiller is a little stiff, But all and all it seems okay to me. I would do as others have said shoot the dang thing and enjoy, If it seems to hinge scrape some off the upper. Good Luck Denny

Thanks for the input guys.  I'm used to working with laminates and boards and they ae much more uniform and you have measure points etc.   This is my second bow from a stave and the little waves and slight dips in a stave really just make my eyes cross sometimes.

If I decide to leave it should I flip the bow and make the top limb the bottom?

looks good to me nate , but i think i suffer from permanent tiller fatigue. flippin it would be a good option

If the lower limb is shorter and has to provide the same deflection surely it must bend through a tighter curve than the upper limb?
That's what I see on this bow and it's fine.
Or to put it the other way round the upper limb is bending less, but if you work on the upper limb won't the lower limb will start to overpower it even more?
That's why I said leave it. Iif you need to think this hard then there's now't wrong with it!
Comments on this hypothesis please.

@ Del
The limbs are the same length.  I don't mess with that assymetrical limb stuff.

Well I strung it up the other day to take another look at it and at brace is was all out of whack.  Didn't appear that bad the night I posted pics.  So now the bow is on it's way to be a 35#er...maybe if I heat treat again can keep her at 40#....

Once I get through this weekend I will get back to it and I will do a tiller along on here and have you guys help me out.  That single FD pic wasn't enough to tell the whole story unfortunately.

Did you see my thread about sudden tiller change in my Ash Meare heath style bow which messed it up? It's gone from being a beautiful 40# BOM candidate to a 30# sad bow lookin' for someone to love it :'(
