While picking through the throw away pile I found this osage splinter. There was plenty of thickness but it was only 3/4" to 7/8" wide. I was gonna see if I could get a bow of 50# or better out of this splinter. But it wasn't to be. She had issues with twists, whoop te dos and snakes that had to be tamed and thus I wasn't gonna make 50#. So I opted for a sweet shooting light weight bow for a youngster or beginner. She is 61 1/2"t/t, 35#@24". She is built with a semi rounded belly, limb width is straight to the last 6" and tapers to 1/4" tips. Black walnut overlays at the tips and handle riser...and she is a sweet shooter. Pat

Nice bow Pat. Looks really cool..........bob
-
That's sweet. You sure have a knack for tillering.
-
Good job Pat!
-
nice looking bow pat! tiller looks great. beautiful bow for a "scrap" piece of wood. what is the handle? looks like a wrap of some sort? -jesse
-
Pat I captured a FD pic of your splinter bow ... or was that a splinter of your Full Draw bow pic? ;D Oh well, in either case I now have it on Page11 of my TBD pages. Pretty little Osage is gonna make some kid or lady mighty happy, buddy.
-
Thanks everyone. I'm gonna keep trying to see how little of osage it takes to make a 50# bow.
Jesse, the handle wrap is hemp cord from Wally World. I wrapped it tight and set it with Massey finish. It makes for a very comfortable, slip resistant wrap. This hemp cord is tough stuff. The red above and below the wrap is silk thread. Pat
-
Nice looking bow Pat. If you need to practice your finishing skills, it looks like that wall is in need of a little finish. ;D No, never mind. That would take away from time building and shooting bows. Justin
-
Nice bow Pat, not all the bows we make need to be 55lbs, some people need lighter bows, someone is gonna be awfully glad you picked that splinter out of the pile.
VB
-
Nice bow. I know some youngster will really like having it. I like the sleak lines and narrow profile.
Eliseo
-
Justin, The siding is cypress and has been on the house 17 years. Why should I finish it now? ;D
VB and Eliseo, I have been making more and more of the lighter weight bows. I'll be posting another soon. I donate them to help pay my way in the archery world. Not many bows out there for kids and beginners. There is always at least one kids bow in the throw away pile if everyone would just look. ;) Pat
-
Pat, don't forget that kids bows can be great for getting you out of a rut. When you have a few bows break and your getting down on yourself, its time to build a kids bow. The lighter weight usually guarantees you will have success. Justin
-
Justin, Check out my 3 latest posts under bows. ::) 1 big people's bow and 2 kids bows. My yew war bow is sitting unattended and I'm making these kids bows. At least I can shoot them! ;D Pat
-
gordon beat me to it. you sir, sure know how to tiller.
-
DANG! - i was gone for 4 weeks and didn't have chance to keep track to what's happening at PA and now i find all these beautifull bows posted! VERY exciting!

Great looking little weapon, Pat, just looks like it would have to shoot good, too.
-
Another nice one Pat! Tiller looks like you nailed it once again! :)
-
Nice Pat
-
Great lookin splinter their Pat, tiller is perfect. ;D
-
Hi Pat,
you are a bowmakingmachine, eh?
In future every splinter of osage is going to nice bows, I think. Very good work and tiller on this one! :)
-
That is a beautiful bow, Pat. Great tiller. I've seen quite a few bows in front of that building. Jawge
-
Thanks everyone.
Jawge, That building is becoming as much of an institution an your sweat pants. ;D Pat
-
nice bow pat!! that would make a nice 3D bow. could shoot it all day.
-
Another nice one Pat,Some times it just ant meant to be you just have to go with what you have to work with and looks like you done a fine job of that. :)
Pappy

Nice bow Pat, looks like a nice shooter to me.
I wanna know about the Mr. Potato Head tree decorations ;D
DanaM
-
Dana, My daughter gave us that tree face. They are molded plastic and look quite real...if I didn't know better. ;D Pat
-
When you think how many would have made a bean pole out of splinter like that.
Nice job, Pat. - Bookmarked, too

great looking little osage bow! i have some staves that i am looking to turn into light bows for kids. could you give me some thickness dimensions back to belly of your limbs at handle/fade/midlimb/tip? i'd love to have a starting place.
thanks!
stan
-
Stan, The thickness at the fades of this bow is 5/8" but the width is only 3/4" or so. If you are working with board bows 1/2" at the fades will get you started. I very rarely measure thickness. I make the bow the length and width and just remove wood until I get the weight I'm looking for. Pat
-
awesome bow, i learn alot from seeing your bows and reading your descriptions. :)
-
Thanks Dingle. We all learn from each other. ;D These light weight are just as much work as a full size bow but because of the light weight I find them easier. Most of the bows I make are for hunting. Hitting the target weight can be critical but with these light bows if it comes out lighter than you want there is a kid or newby that it will be perfect for. I don't think you can make a bow too light. It will be perfect for someone out there. Pat

Wow! Cool bow! Wish I had a splinter that good. What I really want to know is how do you get your glasses to float in front of you like that? Are you a magician too? I maen other than with bow wood. Auggie.
-
Well Auggie, About the glasses...I'll tell you a secret if you promise not to tell anyone. ;) This is part of the primitive powers that we achieve after years of bow building. :D ;D We absorb a special magnetism that gives us that "third hand" we have all wished for. ::) It kinda jest comes with the territory! 8) Pat
-
You are a tillering machine Pat.
-
Kill tiller Pat. Strap three of those babies together and you've got one serious war bow. That's a really nice bow Pat. You're really turning them out lately.

pat im not sure if you were there for the raffle sunday afternoon, but i had gave my 2 kids the pile of raffle tickets and they pulled our number for your osage splinter! both kids saw the number at the same time and it almost started a brawl :) its a snappy little beauty!! its a little too heavy for them to pull right now but not for a lack of trying. i think their gonna allow my girlfriend to shoot it until they get a bit stronger. you are a great bowyer, if i would have tried to tiller that splinter it would be in the overlay/riser pile :)

Great looking little bow Pat! I have a few little pieces laying around, and that is what I am going to try to do with them. Doubt Ill end up with that tiller job though ;) Very nice bow!! David
-
Bryan, It's always good to know where your children have gone and that they are with good folks. I'm so happy ya'll won the bow. She did turn out good and deserves to be used and I know ya'll will do so. David, You won't know til you try. Give it a shot and see what you get. Thanks for the kind remarks. Pat
-
Yeah, I was watching Bryan's kids when they got that bow- biggest grins I think I ever saw on a pair of young'uns. Your hick-backed cedar bow was won by another very happy looking kid, too.
-
I'm happy they both went to good homes and will be used and enjoyed. One of the guys tallying the score cards told me he won a bow I had donated 4 years ago. It had a Lakota style quiver and a few arrows with it. His grandson is still using it ;D
This little splinter really impressed me too! :o I will build others. It doesn't take much osage to make a good bow. Pat
-
That is a great looking splinter! Wish I had an eye for tiller like that - patience. I've learned how to slow it down a little (that's the best advise out there), am currently working on a peice of scrap osage I fetched out of the pile for the daughter - tight little snakey curves all up and down. Hopefully can post it soon.
-
Hey thanks Cowboy, Looking forward to seeing your splinter bow. ;D Pat
