This bow is a pretty good one to showcase my name on here....twistedlimbs although i havent posted much for work lately, i have been building several bows a month. Most of them are are just standard selfbows so instead of posting all of them, I wait for the unique ones to rise out of the wood pile...
This one is Winged elm and was probably the hardest pieces of wood i have ever worked with. The grain was so tight and interlocked.... Just plain hard, It tore my tools up and everything was dull after working this piece. Much harder than my other elm bows
This one is my 75th bow. I think it's a good one to mark the 3/4 of the way to 100.
its 63" long and 50# @ 28". the grip is walnut hull dyed deer leather and the tip overlays are of Black walnut. Its got lots of whoops and whirls in it. Unfortunately, as with most character bows, pictures just dont do the character justice. Despite it's "ducks'n'weaves" it shoots really well. and hits where you point it and for 50#, zips an arrow pretty well. With all the character i was also very pleased with the tiller job. When this bow finds its final home, i hope it gets to do some hunting.
I wish it was about 10# heavier and then I would be packing it around this fall. But you know me 60-75# is my personal, ideal hunting weight.
thanks for checking it out- Ryan

Winged Elm is one of my favorite woods to work. You really did do a great job with it. I wish I could find a piece with that much snake to it. Most of mine that I find is pretty straight. :) :)

Seen this before, and it looks just as good as it did when I seen it last. I have some winged elm drying, can't wait to give it a try. :)

Outstanding work man, a vote getter for sure. I cant wait to see what # 100 looks like. I really like elm , super tough stuff, perfect for a hunting bow. They get used harder, and 50 is a sure fire deer killing weight. Hope to see more from ya.

That's a beauty. I love it when that texture is kept on the back of the bow. Great job.
-
Another fine bow Ryan.Nice job.The hard elms are one of my favorites. God Bless
-
That is one nice bow! Is winged elm much different than some of the other elms?
-
thanks much guys
Jeff- i think winged elm is a bit harder than the other elms and i think makes a slightly better bow but it may just be the ones i have gotten in my area. the winged elms also seem to get way more knots and twisted compared to the others...but again it may have just been the one si was cutting

Ryan,
Gorgeous bow and beautiful tiller. There is definitely a signature to your bows, they are very unmistakable, I like them!
-
nice looking bow,has a real primitive look to it!!
-
Slippery elm is also very hard and dense.I like it because it 's usually easier to find fairly straight slippery. But be warned,it is very difficult to split, although worth the effort,so stick to smaller trees.God Bless

very coolish Bow :)

A man after my own heart! ;) I've had the pleasure of building several bows from winged elm,Great bow wood, most has some character to it,but get her to lay with a string and ya got yourself a good one.
Nice job!

very nice bow, is winged elm a specific species of elm or just the way it grows?
-
thanks much guys for the kind words
dragonman- Winged elm is a specific species of elm. some people call it cork elm. it will have two strips of corkish material running up and down the limbs.

That is one killer looking bow, nice work.
