and the worst in my case !! well this was a hickory with black walnut recurves glued on. it made it through about a dozen arrows before it suffered a minor fiber seperation. this is the second bow from the same board both got me on a swirl in the grain . usually wouldnt be a prob with hickory but it was the death of these . enjoy the destruction

Sorry that happened Ken. I'd love to see a close up pic of those siyahs. How'd it shoot for those 12 arrows?
-
couple more, this used to bother me , just sort of amusing now . on a brighter note i took a 24 inch diameter hickory log 16 foot long to the saw mill today lots of bows in the future ,staves and boards saving the slabs too

i'll get some in the daylight nate , it was pretty quick actually

Damn Ken,
One thing I can say for the quartersawed stuff.....at least if they go away it's usually not an explosion. Man that was purty too!!!!Notice though that ya were "settin" on that design ya rascal ;D
rich
-
well Rich you know im semi retired from bows for the moment but that glue on recurve kept naggin at me . had to try it . hey we'll have some more play wood in the next day or so !!!! ;D

Cool looking forward to it. Think you'll build another like it?
-
yeah soon as i get some better hickory, i will thin down the recurves on the next one to reduce weight, but overall it was a smooth shooter. the other board that broke with the same swirl was a 66 inch mollgeabet with split limbs like a compound half inch grove ran from fade to fade through the working limb. im gonna try that one again too
-
you and kenh are both making the style bows that i love! i wish i could make them myself now, but, im just trying to get a working bow out of this wonderful piece of hickory ive gotten. you make another that stays together, ill trade you for something! lol
-
just had my selfbow blow on me too, seems its goin around.
-
thanks guys , areo if i get one to work i'll let you know
-
Sorry to hear about your loss. My sympathies go out to you in this time of sorrow. :(
At least it is pretty kindling, if you suddenly have a need for that. :)
-
Nice job Ken! Too bad it blew! Did you keep the siyah angle that shallow because of the grain in the walnut? I find 45 degrees is a good angle, but then I laminate my siyahs from at least two pieces of wood with the grains running at angles to each other, for strength.
-
I'm used to it. LOL. Jawge
-
thanks pro, ken i cut them from a plain sawn peice about 2inches wide ,which would make them quarter sawn on the bow just limited by dimensions of the lumber.

pretty cool siyahs. i had wondered if a pyramid design would lend itself to the construction of something similar, figured maybe in the least the outer tips would need to be left a bit thicker and then tillered later as it would seem to have alot of leverage at the base of them, although thinking about it they would really only work the same as static recurves.
-
Very Neat. Thanks for the pics Ken. I know you only had a dozen shots to experience it but was there much hand shock?
-
Nate i thought while building it that there would be significant hand shock but when i started shooting i didnt notice any in comparison to most of the bows i shot
-
Isn't it funny sometimes when theory meets the pavement it doesn't always hold up. Can't wait your next siyah project.
-
awesome ken75, i cant wait! that was a beautiful bow!
