i have a purpleheat and red oak board and was thinking of cutting them down to make a tri lam w/ hickory as a back and oak for the belly, is that a good combo?

I believe the combo would work fine. Just my opinion, but I would make sure the colors of the different woods come out. Whatever you decide I would finish with a true oil and leave it at that.
Like I said...JMO
