Title: lovin this cap and ball
Post by: recurve shooter on July 27, 2010, 02:09:56 am
bought this thing a few weeks ago. its called the Bison, its in the Remington style but im pretty sure its made by traditions. this beast is eighteen inches over all, twelve inch barrel, and 3.something pounds. i shoot thirty grains of pyrodex, with ten grains of dry grits on top of that, and a .44 round ball, and it shoots great. i mean like all six holes touching at thirty yards or so.  ;D i love this thing, its a mean sucker.

(this aint a pic of mine, just one i found on the web.)

David, you use the grits to keep the pressure high without wasting powder that would be blown out the barrel unfired. Here's a couple of mine.

Nice piece Recurve. Until this primitive bow sickness hit me, I hunted black powder only. Several years back I talked my brother into trying hunting. He bought the 7 1/2" version of your pistol to go on a pack in squirrel hunt. I laughed at him and told him dumb idea for his first squirrel hunt.  I heard him shoot once from across the valley. That 44 sure sounded pretty. Yea, he came back into camp that evening with a perfect head shot! He still insists it was skill not luck (LOL).

Ya gotta be Trey's height to use a pistol like this.   I put it on and the muzzle was down in mid-calf.  Could have run the ties down and laced my shoe with them.  .  piper

Still got questions about this Grits thing.

Do the grits act as some sort of seal so the pressure from the burning power does not escape around the ball???
Or do the grits burn and produce pressure like burning power??

Thanks
David

ridge runner, i just use them as a barrier between the ball and the power to help prevent a chain fire, and because my loading rod at full stroke wont pack the ball tight against the max recomended charge of powder. someone on here suggested it (sorry dont remember who) and i went with it. workin great so far. ;D

Mr. Kieth, thanks for the holster, its workin great. kinda completes the gun.

and my concerns about the accuracy of this thing are officially squashed. i shot an artificiall lizard fish luer that was snagged in a tree off the hook with it today, along with the caps off of  some watter bottles.  ;D

one more question for you guys. the max recomended charge for this thing is 30 grains, and im shooting roundballs. yall think i could deerhunt with it? i know i can put the ball where i want it, and i would think that would be all that mattered?  ???
