I made this a few days ago. Its been on PP and flintknappers.com for a few days but i have to use my work comp to resize photo so i can post them here.
This was not easy to make. These were found by the duck river in middle TN and are part of the Duck River Cache. There a ceremonial piece and are thought to have been used in ceremonies on top op the mounds by the Mississippian people.

The Mississippian Mound Builders are awesome. Great effigie!

That is some awesome work! Is that some of your Kentucky Blue? You need to make one from some Flint River to match your dance sword, and now you need to make a dance sword out of something black to match your eagle claw. Does that sound like a rainy day project or what? Bill
-
its made from black novaculite Bill.
I think i am going to make the other two maces next.
-
if anyone would like to learn more about the duck river cache follow this link http://lithiccastinglab.com/gallery-pages/2008februaryduckrivercachepage1.htm

your work always gives me something to inspire to achieve
dont know if i'll ever be good enough to do daggers and effigies like that
but it gives me something to shoot for ;)
-
Always into something different ain't ya boy! ;) That is a nice piece.
-
Which mace were you planning to make? Bill
-
thats too cool jesse. now i gotta search my rock to see if i have anything big enough to punch one out of.
-
To be really correct, you have to use Dover or Bangor. The stuff is about the same quality as Tallahatta quartizite. It is also in boulders, so they had to reduce it to a biface at the quarry site. The biface probably weighted, depending on what they were making, 20+ pounds. They then hauled them home and finished them. And they probably used wood batons. Those were some master knappers. Bill
-
Wow, Jesse, that is cool. Can't wait to see the maces.
-
Bill i wish i could find dover large enough to make some swords and stuff.
I have not made my mind up on witch one i want to make next.
-

Jesse- That is a really nice piece. The evenness of the hook part is particularly impressive.
-
I just had to Bump this back up here next to the new piece of this new 'cache'.
Mr. leapingbare, I hope you are holding on to these pieces for awhile. They could be
as famous as the old Duck River cache one day. :)
Totally Awesome Work!

Jessie that could be my new fav. peice you have done
-
Wish i could Joe,
My flint knapping is a huge part of my income and a huge help financially.
The claw was sold weeks ago and the sword was sold the other day.
Heck I'll make more, and yes one day i would like to replacate the cache and have my own personal collection of it.
-
Just gotta say again Jesse that this is a true display of how talented a flintknapper you are. Nice work man!
-
thank you Josh ;)
