I thought I'd take a break from scraping on my D Knight blank, which I haven't gotten below 70# at 24". Man, I've been scraping. ;D
So, after all the talk about "D" bows on this forum lastweek I thought I'd finish this little one up. It is Hop hornbeam, and from a sapling. I got this in a trade with Jesse (leapingbare) a year or so ago. Personnaly I didn't think this little piece of wood was doable.
It is 51" from N to N and 47# at 28". I was going to get all I could out of it or break it, HHB is pretty impressive wood. I'm real impressed at how it zips an arrow out there. For some reason the top limb would not keep the curve in the tip but it doesen't seem to hurt the performance.
The arrow in the Full-Draw is 30" from nock to tip.

Boy Eddie! you got about all you could out of that piece of HHB. Very nice!
-
very nice job on that killer stave eddie.
like pat said. I think you pulled out all the stops on that one.
very sweet bow.
wade
-
Great lookin bow Eddie,I especially like the full draw picture, thats all there is and there aint no more in that bow. :)Man you do have some knuckle draggin arms too.My 26 inch draw makes me feel alittle puny.
-
You nailed that one.
-
Nice D-bow, looks good, hasn't taken hardly any set to mention and bends well, so it must be good. I've been seeing a lot of these d-bows lately, never liked them before, but I think I'm getting to like them, I'm gonna hafta make one soon
-
Thanks, Pat, I was going after it.
Wade, I wanted that curve in the other limb, but after heating it twice I thought I should quit and be happy.
Dave, ;D The arms not even close to being extended.
Thank you, Gordon
dragonman, try one they are fun, but not as simple as everybody thinks.
-
I didn't know you could tiller a bow! ::) ;D
Guess I was wrong! You did that piece of wood right Eddie.
-
Aww, come on buddy, I love you, too. ;D ;)
-
Wow, amazing what you got out of that. Great job on the tiller, I bet that bow can spit an arrow. Steve
-
Nice one Eddie. Those short bows sure look cool with a full draw like that. 51"? :o your braver than me ;D
-
Thanks, Steve. It is fast! I was suprised.
Jesse, I pulled it a bunch on the pulley before I "cranked 'er back" ;D.
-
nice to see the pros make one every now and then !
-
See what you can do with expert tillering skills. Very nice. I have heated in a little sweep to the tips before, and had one end that just wouldn't take. I ended up taking it out of the other end to maintain symmetry, and keep pressures equal. Nice to know that it really isn't necessary.
-
Good job, Eddie. Excellent tiller. I'm with you. I think the D bows are making a comeback. We should all start trying them and see if we can do as well as you. Very nice. Good challenge.

Eddie from the way the ol pythons are coiled up I'd have thought it was drawing more than that. Really nice little bow.Ron
-
very nice bow!
;)
-
Ken, thank's, don't know about the Pro part ???
Lombard, Dan, To me, it seems like I spend more time tillering one of these bows than NA people probally did. But they didn't have 3,304 people looking at it.
Ronnie, I think I might be getting older, or my scale isn't right. It was spittin' a 60# arrow pretty straight.
-
great looking bow eddie
-
Sweet Bow Eddie...and Yeah...you are getting Older.....but Aint We all......... ;)
-
Nice little bow Eddie. I sure like them short ones.
-
Whoa, that's a nice'un, Eddie, like that style of bow myself. That HHB is good stuff.
-
That's fantastic! Great job! Jawge
-
eddie when i compare what i do to others the pros are obvious, nice bow and tiller that full draw is exactly that fullllllllllllllllllllllllllllll !
-
Now that's one awesome bow right there.
-
REALLY nice bow, Eddie... That thing is really bending too. It should make an excellent tree stand bow this fall... :)
-
Dang, Eddie that is a nice one! :o Dave you should see him when has just eaten a can of spinach!! ;D The hair turns dark, the pipes bulge, it's like seeing the hulk in person! ::) That's how they loaded, unloaded, and hauled all that coral up the hill to the truck, and loaded the truck, and then unloaded it at home! So is it's initiation going to be on a on a piggy? Be a nice turkey bow.

Hey, did you do anything with the bamboo section I gave you, and the carrotwood? I have a couple of long carrotwood staves if you want them. One is about three to four inches in diameter and about seve to eight feet long.
Wayne
-
Nice work, you showed that stave who's boss alright!
Del
-
Nice work Eddie, got a lot out of that short piece of wood, tiller looks good,HHB is some great wood for sure. :)
Pappy
-
Nice arc in that one Eddie! ;)
-
Thank you, everybody.
Wayne, I cut the boo and it is drying and sure, I'd like to try the Carrotwood.
-
Nice job Eddie.HHB is one of my favorites.God Bless
-
I like it too, Pete. It's the first time I've tried using it. I wish it grew down here.
-
Wayne....never heard of....or seen Carrot Wood....what you want for a piece?
-
Looks good.. You said you wanted a heavy blank.. ;D so get back to scraping!! >:D
-
El D, it is very heavy, when green, and still not too light when dry. I have never made a bow from it, but when it dries, it is very hard! It is heavy, like I said, just pay shipping, and it is yours. I have two pieces, so I will give Eddie one, and if you still want the other, I will send it to you. I don't know anything about wheather you use sapwood, heartwood, or a combination of both. Wide or narrow. I know nothing about it as a bow wood, but I have heard that it makes a good bow . I produces small round yellow berries, about the size of a medium marble. The birds love them. They are banned in some of the more exclusive neighborhoods, because they are so invasive. They are a nuisance. You can cut them down to the roots, and in a week, you will see new shoots, coming up, and they grow fast. It would be cheaper to send you a bunch of seeds. I don't know how cold tolerant they are. I assume they are a subtropical species. Not really sure. But I'm sure that they are a pain in the arse. I think Eddie said that Bone Pile (Roger) has made a bow or two from it, or knows more about it as a bow wood, and how to use it. Like I said, I don't have a clue. I would hate send it to you, and find out it isn't worth a crap, but it is sort of a fruit tree, and the wood is very hard. I haven't made anything from it yet, but I have some smaller diameter pieces, I am waiting to dry, so I can carve a walking stick for a Friend of mine in Montana. Why not wait till this stuff dries, and you find out more about it, and the bow capabilities, and such, from someone on here who knows more about it than I do. Then if you still want it, I will send it to you. The piece I promised Eddie, is about 3-4" in diameter, and about 7-8' long. The other piece is a little smaller in diameter about 3-3 1/2" or so, maybe a little smaller, just guessing without having to get up and go into the garage, and look at and measure it, but it is about the same length. Anyone out there ever make a bow out of carrotwood? I can send you some seeds if you want, and you can plant them now, and see if, and how well they grow out there, and it the cold kills them, and if they will send up new shots in the spring. But be forewarned, the birds Will scatter the seeds all over the place, and a lot of people will be a little upset with you! That is how I got mine, my neighbor has one in his front yard, I now have them sprouting up all over, and my neighbor in back has them along the fence line. Between the birds, and tree rats, it is a never ending job of pulling up young shoots.

Great little bow there Eddie, i like it !
-
Thank you John.
El D, Bob, Coowachobee is the one that made some with it and Parnel.
-
That's a good one Eddie 8)
-
yep, you definitely went all in on that one. nice tiller, sucks the top limb wouldn't hold on the recurve.
-
stick that sounds like cinaberry to me , guess not though
-
NICE, I love a short D bow and you really nailed it with that one. That is an impressive draw length from a short piece of wood.
-
Thanks, Phillip.
Chris, I heated it twice, but didn't want to take a chance of scorching it. There was a knot right in the bend. I flinched the first time I yanked it back that far because of it.
Ken, Rick, it is fast, and like I said, "It was going to make it or break it". ;D
-
Shoot Eddie, I didn't even see this one when I'd taken a couple weeks off. It turned out nicely, I'd like to give it a shot or two when I come visit, if possible. Anyhow, nice work!
-
Eddie, the short bows don't really give up that much to the longer bows. The longer bows store more energy but the shorter bows maintain a lot more efficiency making them pretty close in launching arrows. Steve
-
I don't drift over here to the bow thread much.
Hell i would not of traded ya the stave if i did not think ya could do it :) .
All jokin aside thats a sweet bow, I got to see it in person the other weekend and it sure is nice, well done bud!!
-
Thanks, Jesse.
-
Good work Eddie take that with u next time u go hunting for coral u might run into a gator! LOL Nice bow!

Thanks Russ, You got to get those gators at night.
