Title: Osage Sapling Bow
Post by: gmc on May 31, 2010, 12:49:50 pm
I just finished this up over the weekend and thought since I hadn't posted anything lately I'd take a few pictures. This bow is from a Osage sapling that I cut a few months ago. This piece of wood was a ring-chasing nightmare, I actually had to drop three rings to get it done, unbelievable.

This little creek I've been known to travel early on Sunday mornings with a cup of coffee in my hand. If I have a bow to take pictures of this is where it happens.

Hope everyone is having a nice long weekend.

Here is some information on the bow:
56'' NTN
1.25 wide at the widest
Tips are 3/8 wide, flipped
The handle is linen sealed in shelac
Draw weight is 46 lbs. @ 28
You can probally find .5 inch of set if you look hard enough

Wow that turned out beautiful!!!  I really like the knots on the belly side and half an inch of set from a 56" bow is pretty awesome in my book.  All around great job man!

Very cool, well tillered little osage pole bow. This is my favorite style of bow!  8)
If you cut the wood yourself and take precautions while drying you can use the sapwood right under the bark as your back. You'll be surprised at the bows you can make using osage sapwood and heartwood and especially in a pole bow style. I have a 2" to 3" osage pole that Yazoo gave me at the TN Classic. I sawed it in half, lengthwise, added spacer between the two halves and wrapped them together until they dry. The spacers allow plenty of airflow and wrapping them together should insure no twisting and no excessive backset. On the last pole stave I split each half twisted a bit but also drew into about 6" of backset. A bit too much. IMO  I can always add backset later after the staves cure.

Thanks guys for the nice compliments!

Pat, I can't wait to try your method. I could have gotten two bows out of this one but was afraid to risk the split. Makes total sense with no more sapwood that's on a sapling anyway and the drying technique is an excellent idea. Thanks again.

Remind me to smack you up side the head when I see you Sunday for winding about how you just wasn't satisfied with how this bow was working out.  That's a dang fine bow anyone (in there right mind, haha) would be happy to carry into the woods.  Let's shoot AT some squirrels this spring season June 5-18.  :)  I'll bring you some osage Sunday.  Maybe you can destroy them as well as you did this stick.  Great job, my friend!  BTW the way, this might move ahead of Crazy Horse as my fav.  I'll just need to shoot it to be sure.

Oh, and WOW!!!!!

Thanks again guys for the nice comments:

Dave, I won't comment about comparison to the bow that you are talking about, knowing that Hickory could never compare to Osage in this neck of the woods ::)

Whiner  >:D well maybe a little  ::)

Shooting "at" squirrels is about all that's going to happen with my accuracy level but it still sounds fun and you are on for a hunting trip.

Very, very nice.  That is the D bow that I want to make, about that length out of Osage.  Yours looks great, I hope it brings you luck!

All joking aside, GMC, very nice looking bow.  When I started this journey, that's the bow I wanted to build.  And, I have a piece of osage ready when I am.  But, as you know I have a few more projects I want to complete, first.

Thanks Wade, Parnell and Dave for the nice comments.

Scott, the bow is a little shorter than I had planned at the start. The sapling split 6'' back on one end as it dried, so it did end up smaller than I originally wanted it to be. You never really know what you will end up with on a stave and this was my first using a sapling. I see a few more of these in my future. Thanks for the nice comment.

I missed posting a picture of the flat profile of this bow so I will add that to this post for anybody interested.

Wow!  That's a super cool bow!  I've been working on a kids bow made from a very small diameter piece of osage and it has those same color bands in it, though not to the extent in your bow.  Maybe those small diameter trees do something different when they're making wood because they seem to deposit all kinds of cool colors in the wood.  The bigger osage trees just make the same color wood from tip to tip without all those interesting colors.  YUK!   ha ha ha   ;D

I got the chance to shoot this bow last Sunday.  It is SWEET!  GMC made me stop shooting it.  Something about a cloud burst and the rain getting heavier.  Oh well, we got to dry off is the shop.  My the cloud of yeller dust absorb some of the moisture from our clothes.  :)
