Title: my 1st knife
Post by: brownhillboy on April 29, 2010, 10:44:53 pm
I've been wanting to make a knife ever since I started looking at all of the nice knives that you guys post on here.  I wouldn't put mine in the "nice" category, but I'm happy to have completed my 1st, and I learned quite a bit doing it so hopefully the next one will be better.  The blade is probably a little short for the handle, but it would've been about an inch longer if I hadn't snapped the end off during final shaping not only once but TWICE!! >:( :'(  Well, I know what I was doing wrong to cause it to snap, so maybe I can remember not to do that again.  The blade is tiger stripe obsidian, and the handle is from a 6pt. whitetail that I arrowed a few years ago.  I hafted the blade with pine pitch and artificial sinew.  Thanks for looking!

I don.t know what the handle material was on most of the old stone bladed knives, from finding old points and blades, I know most of the blades were just about the same size as yours.  As several people have pointed out, it is functional, and the right size and shape.  It looks good to me.  Bill

Thanks for the compliments!  I guess I was self concious about the handle compared to the blade because my son said the handle was too long.  I told him that's because the handle was made for a man, not a boy! ;D

Good answer!!  :)

I really like that knife, man.  You should be very proud.  Any breakages add to the learning experience ;)

Looks just right to me. For skinning I think anything over 3" is too long anyway.
