They are illegal to possess now but they are coming back in a big way .I would say that they will have a limited season or a tag system soon.Allot of people I know that go out in the gulf say they are a pain in the butt, they suck up everything and you can't keep one.We used big jacks and ladyfish down in Boca Grande with a Penn4.0 and 150 test line and couldn't get them up.They can get as big as a couch, but taste so much better ::)

I had freinds of mine a few years back diving in that Blue Hole off Napes get chased back to the boat by a large Jewfish. He was trying to eat them.

I've seen lots of grouper while diving, but only one monster jewfish/goliath...and it had to be 6' long, and at least a couple of hundred pounds!  It was huge.  We were in Belize in 2002 and it was tucked down in a channel thru the reef at about 70' depth.  I swam about 15' feet above it and I remember thinking at the time, "I hope it ignores me!".

Grouper is good eating. I would think the giants wouldn't be so good But I've never eaten one...or a part of one!  ;D
