Me, Chris, (Mechslasher,) and my son Cody went spent some time on the lake this weekend. Did a little bowfishing Saturday afternnoon. The wind was so strong and the water was so muddy that it was hard to do much with 'em, but we shot a few and missed a few more. I shot one carp that was at least 25 pounds, took us and the boat on a Nantucket sleigh ride for a couple minutes. We threw out some jugs Saturday night and caught a good mess of catfish and a few gar. Had a great time, already looking forward to the next trip.

Wish I could have been there, too. I had a turkey to kill. You guy's had a fun, productive weekend from what Chris told me. He said ya'll got about 70# of cat fish. Did you keep those Carp skins?
-
No, Eddie we didn't. I don't think the common carp have those pretty skins like the grass carp. We kept the catfish fillets, though. :) And I finally got Chris to eat some grilled garfish. That gar is pretty good eatin'.
-
Steve, try cutting it into nuggets and make it like Shrimp Scampi. I make a really good fish jerkey out of it, too.
-
Dang! nice fishing trip. Lots of good eats there. 8)

I love fresh catfish. I am about due for a trip back to Mississippi. Steve

Looks like a blast and no dem der large scale bass skins aren't any good :(
-
wish i could find a carp to shoot. be alot easyer to hit than these little two foot long gar im shooting lol.
-
Looks like a fine time. That is a mess of fish. :)
-
AIN'T that a blast?? there has been a lot of chatter lately, do any of you eat carp, the common ones? if so how do you prepare? allways wondered, to shy to ask good job, wish I was there!! JEFFW

I've never found any good way to eat carp that I like. I guess if I didn't have anything else, I'd eat one- but they don't taste even in the same category as our native fish. If you like fish patties, that would probably be the best way to fix them. The gar, on the other hand, are really good.
-
i second that. gar is tasty. kinda a pain to skin though. only thing i ever skint that required a hack saw and tin snips lol.
-
Recurve, just chop that head and tail off with a hatchet or axe, then cut 'em down the back.
-
I just hacksaw the tail and head to the bach bone and then zip it down the middle. Cut out the backstraps.
-
yeah i do the same thing, but i have trouble cuting down the back with a blade, so i use tin snips. ;D
-
I usually use tinsnips to cut down the back too. We also found a heavy pair of shears that Chris has that works great-we call them the gar opener. :)
