Title: indirect percussion and other stuff.
Post by: jamie on March 14, 2010, 02:33:21 pm
they arent the prettiest things but the 4 larger pieces were done using indirect percussion. billet and antler punches were used to do all the thinnning and edge work. i need to clean up the edges on all of em. the other stuff is more 125 gr +/- points, and i treid my hands at some "bird points" again.

thanks guys. the big stuff is perd. the points are a mix of texas dover and a johnstone.. birds are geaorgetown, english and normanskill. really like the indirect percussion. scary part is sometimes it removes too much material. that corner notch i almost broke a couple times.

Great looking work jamie!  Glad you took a few minutes to rest. ;)  You must not have any kids.  When mine aren't keeping me busy with other things, they're trying to take my knapping tools and material! :o  I'm glad they're interested anyway.  It's kinda hard to teach something you haven't learned very well yourself though! ::)

thanks blacktail  ;D

vb what i forgot to tell ya was the billet on the far right is what i use for thinning and the antler punch for setting up platforms. the billet has a small groove in the face that the platform sits in. it kinda prys the flake off when you strike. the two small tines i use for notching. platforms have to be perfect or those small tips will snap. had to dress them more than once. ive even used the small stickers on those tine to knock the steep edges off the notches. the bone is for notching too . i use it with pressure and indirect. especially if i get into a thick area. im constantly redressing the bone to keep the edge flat and sharp. peace
