Title: backing question

i was digging thru my staves today and found a little belly split of hhb(all heartwood)
now i dont feel like now have the ambition to chase a ring to get to a single ring for the back
so i was wondering would a hick back work well on hhb?

Made one with Ash backing up American Hornbeam (Ironwood) it worked out real well. Dont know about HHB but even if it's stronger than AHB so would be the Hickory over the ash. Seems like a good combo to me. IMO :D

I don't know Sailordad but, look at my Maple backed Ipe.  Some may think that combination wouldn't work but it has been doing great for me.  Is it as good as the other 'standard' options of hick and boo?  Maybe not, but the few that I've made have been doing great.  So...?

i think that combo would work well Tim.

chasing a ring on already split HHB? my eyes burn and the smoke is starting to come out my ears just thinking about it, I'm guessing earnhardt hasn't seen an HHB stave up close, or maybe he said it toungue-in-cheek. I usually can't even distinguish rings on an HHB stave unless their is some staining of the wood or something.
